With the launch of Google Nexus One smartphone in the market, hype about Nexus One beating Apple iPhone has reached its limits. Just because the Google smartphone has better features than the iPhone by a thin gap, should it be considered to be an iPhone killer? No, it’s not an iPhone killer.
Not everyone uses mobile application for browsing, chatting and for emails. There are people who love to listen to music and play games as well. In 2007, the value of music on phones was worth $9.3 billion and gaming was worth over $5 billion. What about people who are eco-friendly? Apple product environmental reports show the complete environmental footprint of every new Apple product.
To validate the reasons why Google Nexus One is not an iPhone Killer, here are eight reasons:
1. Multi-touch function: Google Nexus One cannot beat iPhone when it comes to multi-touch functionality (swiping, multi-fingered gestures, pinch to zoom, etc.). One of the unique aspects in iPhone is its multi-touch feature. The Nexus One’s single-finger prodding works well enough, but its lack of multi-finger gesture controls like pinch to zoom makes the iPhone feel so advanced. The pinch to zoom, capacitive touchscreen of the iPhone is probably the key component of the handset’s success in the market.
2. Power and battery: Although the Nexus One has a powerful and removable battery compared to the iPhone, it isn’t efficient enough to give a talk time of 12 hours like an iPhone. Apple iPhone gives up to 300 hours of standby time with internet usage of 5 hours on 3G and 9 hours on Wi-Fi along with 10 hours of video playback and 30 hours of audio playback. Nexus One lags behind the iPhone in all these abovementioned battery capabilities.
3. iPhone as an iPod: As of September 9, 2009, more than 220,000,000 iPods had been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling digital audio player in history. So, this is an added advantage for an iPhone, because it can act as an iPod. The Nexus One is an Android handset that means it cannot plug in to your music collection as seamlessly as an iPod or an iMac. Apple iPhone is a part of an entire ecosystem, with accessories, covers, speaker systems and even ties that are built to house iPods. iPhone, which can double as an iPod, has feature like Genius Mixes (automatically searches your iTunes library, finds songs that go great together, and creates multiple mixes you’ll love), Genius Playlists and Voice control feature that gives you the ability to control music playback with spoken commands.
4. Sync Feature: Even Google Nexus One, which is running on Android Platform, has the ability to sync with iTunes but it usually requires a third-party app and it is a manual process. Android phones cannot update playcounts or ratings in iTunes, this feature comes in handy when you want to generate auto-playlists (that means when you sync the phone, iTunes removes the ones that you have played since the last sync and tops the playlist up with some more unplayed tracks automatically), which is found in an iPhone. Also, iTunes automatically keeps the iPhone updated with music every time.
Photos and videos taken on iPhone can also be automatically synced with iPhoto which sorts them into folders and even geotags them. Then the photos are automatically synced with Apple TV and backed up to a remote hard drive.
The Nexus One is a good phone if you use Google apps, but is not so good at syncing with a desktop or laptop computer.
we highlighted the fields where Nexus One can never top iPhone. Remember, folk, iPhone did not happen by chance – it is the product of meticulous planning by Apple Inc. And, it is also not by chance that it has set the benchmark for smartphones. Read on to find out why iPhone can still hold onto its title of the most coveted smartphone ever despite launch of Google phone Nexus One.
5. Applications: In terms of applications (apps), the iPhone is way ahead of the Nexus One. Apple App Store offers over 100,000 apps. In fact, iPhone continues to be popular, partly due to the fact that it gives users access to the legendary App Store where one can browse over 100,000 programmes which, when downloaded, can turn the smartphone into a gaming device, information source or even a musical instrument. No wonder, more than 3 billion applications (apps) have been downloaded for the iPhone so far. On the other hand, Nexus One users can only access around 20,000 apps in Android market.
6. Games: iPhone has become a mobile gaming device of a choice. iPhone has a very wide gaming platform. There are some very strong gaming titles available for the iPhone users.
Recently, Gameloft, a French developer, who has produced some very strong titles for the Android Platform, announced a reduction of their investment in Android as their financial director has said that, on Android, nobody is making significant revenue.
On the other hand, the App Store of Apple is filled with an impressive collection of iTunes and apps capable of delivering some really interesting games, songs, movies etc.
7. Android Vs Mac OS: The new operating system of Google is good, but that doesn’t mean, it will provide the comfort and ease which iPhone already offers. Apple has updated their OS versions many times which has consistently increased the ease in usability of that software in each revision. But Android is still young in the market and it has to go through a lot of makeover and will have to go through several updates in near future before it can deliver a performance matching iPhone’s OS.
Of course, third party vendors are relatively happy with Google. They can create devices that run their company’s software without fear of Google competing against them. But if that happens, it could reduce the number of companies using Android OS that in turn will lead to negative impact on Android market. Would that spell trouble for the Android OS itself? Maybe possible.
8. Hardware: Google is new to hardware. They have ventured into the market of Web services and software. But hardware is a new business to them. Since this is their first plunge into the market, there may be some defects in hardware, which may surface, causing problems for users later. It is entirely possible that Google’s first foray into hardware won’t be as stellar as Apple’s first jump into the mobile market. That doesn’t mean that customers won’t be able to trust Google, but it is an unknown entity right now.
On the other hand, even though Apple’s products are expensive, you do get what you pay for and Apple’s attention to detail is what makes Apple products, like the iPhone, a pleasure to use.
As highlighted above, although the iPhone has few better features compared to the Nexus One, let’s be honest about the newly launched product in the market.
Nexus One does beat iPhone in some aspects. For instance, Google’s smartphone has an ultra-powerful processor, a bigger screen, latest Android 2.1 OS, a better camera, a good browser and a higher storage capacity. It also boasts of built-in noise cancellation technology and has a voice control feature that works with almost every app in the phone.
But as mentioned before, will Nexus One beat the iPhone in view of the distinctive features discussed above? The answer is no. Both the giants in the field of smartphones have to go through stiff competition to outmatch each other but definitely, the Google smartphone is not an iPhone killer, not just yet. In this regard, Apple’s experience plays a greater role compared to Google’s new venture into the hardware market.

Its my first holiday gone from my family, and I want to get my mom and brother an 2nd gen ipod. Preferably, green, blue, purple, red, or orange. But I need 2!
I haven't heard anything bad about apple products therefor I have purchased an IMAC G4 as a starter. Now I know that they cant get viruses but I dont know if their are any bad sides to the apple computers. With that said I wonder if Limewire can give a virus to a Mac.
i need a Mac that has at least 2ghz cpu 1 or 2gb of ram and fully working video card and bluetooth and so on and so forth and i need it for under like 400$ with shipping can ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE???????
I wanted to pass along to those who may not know that this iPod is not platform specific as long as music is loaded manually in lieu of syncing. The advantage if you are like me, your partner/spouse who uses iTunes on an XP system can load music along with yours from your Mac to this iPod. Just remember to change iPod mode to manual and then playlist from Mac and PC's can be loaded together.
