Can someone answer this...If a bible is printed in the years between 1861-1865 how likely is it that it was carried during the war. Wouldnt it be more likely that most "carried" Civil War Bibles were printed in the previous years to 1861, like personal or family bibles that a soldier would already own. (With the exception of a "presented" bible). All responses and opinions welcome, I will check back often. Thanks!
"The truth is," wrote Union Gen. William T. Sherman shortly before leaving Savannah, "the whole army is burning with an insatiable desire to wreak vengeance upon South Carolina. I almost tremble at her fate, but feel she deserves all that seems in store for her." The destruction Sherman's army had caused on its way to Savannah had surely made Georgia howl, but it was mild compared with what detested South Carolina was to face. Here the war had started, and now the first secessionists were to get retribution. One of his soldiers wrote home, "If we don't purify South Carolina, it will be because we can't get a light."
After leaving Savannah on February 5, 1865, Sherman's 60,000 men took a direct line toward Columbia, the capital. Able South Carolina men had long since left for the Confederate armies in distant states, and the Union soldiers faced only token resistance from any organized Rebel troops. Sherman's men foraged liberally upon the native population, and everywhere left little more than clusters of black chimneys to mark the sites of where towns had been. One soldier joked that the name of the town of Barnwell should now be changed to Burnwell. Still, the march was grand and spectacular.
By the night of February 15, the first of the Union soldiers had reached the Congaree River across from Columbia. The next day they sighted their cannon on the State House across the river and fired shells into the heart of the city. Other members of their forces laid pontoon bridges and crossed the river. On the morning of February 17, the advancing blue horde was met by the mayor of Columbia, who surrendered the city and was in turn assured by Sherman that the city and its inhabitants would not be harmed. Even so, as the blue soldiers marched into Columbia, some could be heard to sing, "Hail, Columbia, happy land. If you don't burn, I'll be damned."
Fascinating Fact: Confederate troops evacuated Charleston, S.C., the same day that Columbia was occupied by Sherman. The next day Old Glory again flew over Fort Sumter.
Hi there, I am going through a weird obsession with all history having to do with the civil war...I cant seem to find books or videos that really fill in all the details from civilian life of the families, life as a civil war soldier, horrors of the wounded and hospitals, prisons, timelines from beginning to end, specifics on weapons, union, calvery, confederate and civilians. even food and/or starvation of our men. Can anyone recommend specific books and movies?? maybe some favorites?? Can be fictional if its based on facts. Any opinions on Shelby Foote...seems to be alot of interest in the book section on this author. Thanks in advance... all replies welcome, Rebecca
January 25, 1865, Warrensburg, Mo., "The Killing of Allen McReynolds"
HDQRS. CO. H, SEVENTH CAV. MISSOURI STATE MILITIA, Warrensburg, Mo., January 25, 1865.
Col. JOHN F. PHILIPS, Commanding District of Central Missouri:
COLONEL: I beg leave to submit the following statement connected with the killing of Allen McReynolds: I ordered Lieutenant Crain with a portion of the command to proceed to Grand Pass Church, some six miles east of Waverly, and to remain there until joined by me. While there he sent two men of his command to the house of Allen McReynolds to get something to eat and to palm themselves off as bushwhackers, which they did successfully. While there McReynolds told them he was willing to feed them and aid them in any way he could, but declined to carry provisions to the brush for fear of being caught and killed by the Federals. He also informed them that they were unsafe where they were, as squadrons of Federal troops had left Warrensburg, Sedalia, and Marshall the day before to thoroughly scout the country thereabouts, and to then concentrate at Miami. He also advised them to proceed to one Tracy's for safety and security, it being an out-of-the-way place and where Federal scouts seldom traveled; that he (Tracy) had plenty of forage and would take pleasure in entertaining them. When the command were through feeding, Lieutenant Crain arrested McReynolds and brought him out to the command. Soon after I joined them; heard the evidence above given, which he (McReynolds) acknowledged, as also to the fact that Quantrill and band had stopped with him several times, and other bands of bushwhackers which he had never reported to the Federal authorities. On consultation with the squadron commanders (Captain Hamblin and Lieutenant Crain) it was decided to execute McReynolds, which was carried out under my orders.
Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
R. M. BOX,
Captain Company H, Seventh Cavalry Missouri State Militia.
Sherman's (bummers) are pillaging, murdering and raping helpless civilians in Savannah, Georgia. Completing Federal "March to the Sea" This is why we have posse comitatus today. Beware of the Patriot Act lest this happen again. Mrs. Traci

Hey everyone ! Thanks for allowing me in your neighborhood. I'm new to this whole eBay thing. I'm trying to get a store started. I have a real Store here in Oregon. It's called Black Powder Jack's. I have a lot of goodies for blackpowder shooters, buckskinners, flyfishers, and some art and jewelry. I do quite a bit with deer and elk hides, even a little buffalo. So check out some of my stuff I have listed. My son-in-law is giving me some help, since I don't have any experience on computers or internet. So hopefully we can make a bunch of happy customers.
