I want to thank everyone that has responded to my posting of my neighbor's dog being poisoned and killed last week. I'm still reeling from it. Just to give a little more information, our block is probably one of the worst to live on. We had to deal with an older couple who were both severe alcoholics for 14 years while they terrorized the neighborhood from children to animals, adults, and yes, even the people who did warm up to them. When the man approached a teenager with a handgun hanging out of his pocket because her music was too loud in her car, that's when our neighborhood got together. We pursued them until they moved away. End of story? No. We had at the same time, another older couple who met on the internet which then turned into a love/hate relationship. She smashed his windows out of his Corvette one night, stabbed him another night. My husband arrested her that night of the stabbing. Now, the older neighbors behind us also have a shady past which involves prison, vandalism, theft, etc. For the member who said there may be more to this story? I don't know what that means. I gave the whole account actually as it happened even admitting that the owner left her dog out at night. Now that you know about the supposed neighbors that poisoned her, does that change your mind any? Let me tell you what part of Houston I live in. I live 1/2 mile where Andrea Yates drowned her 5 children to which my husband's partner was the first unit on the scene. I also live in the same area where the dentist rolled over her husband with a car and killed him, where the man went back to NASA and killed his boss because he thought he was getting a bad review, where the astronaut tried to kill her lover's new girlfriend, where the mother destroyed her baby's genitalia. Am I in a normal area? Our community doesn't just end up on the local news...we end up on the National news, Jay Leno, you name it. Our neighborhood looks something like Wisteria Lane! Wait, they have weird problems too, what am I thinking! I cannot stand back and let my block get away with bullying children, animals, or just people. I want to cry every time I go in my backyard and not hear that dog run to the fence waiting for me to pet her. The owner hardly ever pet her, didn't walk or play with her. The owner even got an offer from a friend who had a farm outside of Houston with two big dogs and she asked me if she should give her away. I said do it and deal with your husband later! Did she do it? NO! She didn't care for the dog near as much as her husband did. The husband did care and was just two weeks away from seeing her when she was killed. HE cared about her. But not obviously enough if he isn't going to pursue anything against these terrible people. When the dog would hear me go in the backyard with my two dogs, she would paw at a fence board until it came loose so she could see what was going on and be petted. I don't have the courage to go nail that fence board back. It reminds me of her and how I need to fight for justice since her own owners won't do it. I appreciate any and all help from anyone who cares and have received some great advice already. Maybe its my connection with law enforcement, but I hate to see an injustice happen to children, animals, or just people in general. I think about it night and day and am convinced they are scared because since the dog died and I put flyers out in the neighborhood, they have not been spending time in their backyard. The wife, who we think did it because she hated her husband's dog and it also mysteriously died also after just a few months, attempted to wave at my husband to which she never does...EVER. Things just don't click. I will keep everyone posted as to how my progress is going either way. If anyone has any more advice, I'm open to suggestions. It can't be against the law or get me in trouble, though! If I keep a level head and do things right, justice will be served. If anything, I want them to move and let us have some well deserved peace on this insane block in an insane community!
MY MALE 10 YEAR OLD CHIHUAHUA HAS STARTED PEEING ON MY TOILET! I NEVER CATCH HIM BUT IT IS OBVIOUSLY HIM, CAN'T SEE MY FEMALE HIKING HER LEG. THEY ARE BOTH FIXED. SOMEONE TOLD ME TO CLEAN IT WITH VINEGAR AND HE WOULDN'T DO IT AGAIN BUT SURE ENOUGH, HE HAS. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO STOP THIS?
My dobe seems to be depressed 4-5 days out of the week! He just had his 1yr birthday and just mopes around most of the time. Doberman Pinschers are very full of energy and need many activities to keep them entertained. My wife and I both work banker hours and rus is under crate training. When we come home rus is full of energy but only for several minutes then just mopes around...He will lay by the back door window and let off quite wimpers. We walk him all the time but its not enough to depleate his energy levels. We have a friend bring over her dog and thats when rus seems to be alive. He can spend the whole day outside playing with his friend. But his friend only comes over 1-2 times every two weeks. I'm considering another doberman so rus can have a soulmate...I feel really bad for him; I really dont want him going through his 13 years not experiencing a 4 legged friend. What think ye?
What changes have you made in your dogs diet since the whole pet food scare?
I never used any of the wet dog food that they had listed, but I am having a terrible time finding a good healthy dry food without all the artificial preservatives and corn fillers. I am currently using Nutro MAX http://www.nutroproducts.com/. My dogs really like it, and it seems better than IAMS or Science diet.
What foods do you use or recommend that’s healthy?
I also make my dogs homemade dog treats, if you would like a free recipe, check out my eBay store page link for free recipes, help yourself!! My dogs love them!
It was the weekend of July 4th 1976 and my mother and I were riding to a local mall as I blabbed incessantly about wanting a toy poodle. My mother half listened as she drove with more important things on her mind. "Millie has one and I want one too," my fourteen-year-old mouth said flippantly. She agreed without listening as we entered the mall. Sitting out front, a woman flushed woman sat with a single puppy inbox. "How much for the dog,” my mother asked. I tried to dissuade her but she gave me the “look” then turned toward the woman. "Lady, I've been out here all day and I'll give you him for free,” she replied beet red and clearly dehydrated. "I'll take him,” she said sitting the strange looking puppy in her purse." Leering at me she said, “There is you toy poodle.” "He's part German Sheppard and basset hound and he's six weeks old," was the last thing the relieved woman said as we walked away. I looked at the tiny black and brown mutt with ears so floppy he could barely see and sulked at my mother's insensitivity to my wants. Little did she know she was starting a trend when she shopped with the puppy sitting peacefully in her purse. People oohed and ahhed. He was cute but felt wronged and began scheming how to get rid of him when his head popped and peeked at me with his big brown eyes. Negative thoughts melted as I was hit with love at second sight. He was so cute and sat placidly in her purse. When we left he was in my arms and between glances licked my face. By the time we got home the deal was sealed. I loved him but my mom became his mom too. From day one she made his food and treats always adding fresh vegetables, lean meat, grain and seasoning. His treats were prepared with as much thought as well. Soon I was the food and treat maker and Bernard Edward Taylor III Esq. (Yes that was his full name) might have been a mutt but he had pedigree cuisine.
Fast forward thirty years later and I heard the spirit of my mom whisper "Sell the food and treats in your shop." First thing I did was tweak the original recipe based on the nutritional needs of today's dog as well as finding the right combination of ingredients that could suit a dog's palette. Poochie Phood was born. It's an all-natural, vitamin fortified, dry dog food. I used lean chicken w/livers, fish, fresh vegetable along with vitamin C,D,E, and Glucosamine for bone/joint maintenance. With the recent scare with pet food my product has become a hot commodity. I don't include preservatives, by-products, colors or dyes and for the human aesthetic I add sesame seeds and make them smell good The problem is HomeGrown Creations; 1514 U Street, NW Washington, DC is an art collective so how would this concept go over? I now have over twenty regular customers and plan to expand to DC area boutiques. Who would have thought a benign memory would become a business-THANKS MOM!
My little Zoey, a nine year old Australian Terrier has CCL surgery on her right back leg about two weeks ago. I'm supposed to keep her in "couch potato" mode, but what can I say... she's a terrier! We've be carrying her up and down the steps but occasionally she sneaks up or down on her own, which is freaking me out. She is starting to put some weight on the leg now, but she still mostly holds it up.
Does anyone know how long it takes for this type of surgery to heal? The incision looks fine and the stitches are out. If I can figure out how to post a picture, I will post one of Zoey. She is beautiful! (Of course, ALL dogs are beautiful, right? Especially our own doggies!)
I'm glad I found this neighborhood about dogs. I love talking about them, reading about them, being with them, I love everything about dogs!
All the best! Betsy
P.S. My ebay store is Vintage Art Magnets where I have lots of beautiful dog magnets, all images from vintage postcards. Stop by and let me know what you think!
