This year, more than any I can remember, non-profit organizations are struggling against an outgoing rip-tide of funding sources. Unfortunately, many are closing their doors, cutting their staff and eliminating services, or having to move out of their spaces to more economical quarters in order to stay afloat.
One way to help, especially if you are also suffering the limping economical woes of the US Dollar, is to re-gift an unwanted present that you don't like, doesn't fit (or that you already have five of) and pass on the sentiments of the giver to someone less fortunate than ourselves.
I am promising to re-gift at least one of the presents I receive this holiday season to donate to a non-profit to auction for funds at one of their events. They get something new, and saleable, and someone gets to receive the services or support they need.
You could also donate a percentage of the proceeds of your sale as a seller to a non-profit through eBay and PayPal. It's a great way to say you care.
For years, my sister-n-law would regularly receive designer handbags from her mother. Being a very busy stay at home mom, my sister-n-law never used these bags and would stow them away in a closet. After they accumulated for a while, my brother began to sell them on eBay and was able to give her a Very Nice piece of jewelry with the proceeds. The bags were never missed. :-) Smooth.
I have been regifting for as long as I can remember. I try very hard not to ever mess up and give it back to the person that gave it to me, but I sometimes would just love to regift it to that person so they would maybe stop and think "why did I give this to her?" LOL as so often family members give such totally inappropriate gifts. I would almost rather have gag gifts than serious gifts that are totally useless, know what I mean? But, please don't get me wrong. I do appreciate the thought and that really is what is important. I did this past year find out how to get things to a local women's homeless shelter so, they have been receiving a lot of my stuff.... that makes both them and myself feel a whole lot better about it all.
If you're anything like me, re-gifting is more than a good way to recyle unwanted and/or unused items--it's an obsession.
I took the concept to new heights last year, when I combed through the post-holiday sales to stock up on close-out items that were practically being given away at rock-bottom prices (literally pennies on the dollar). Now I pick up items all year long and have a whole closet in my house dedicated to the cause. When the holidays, a birthday, or other event comes around, I'm always covered! And what I don't gift or use myself, I sell on eBay during the appropriate season for the item so I can buy more stuff:)
What's your secret? Ever been caught giving someone their own gift back? Here's your chance to confess the good, the bad, and the downright funny...
My in-laws have the unique ability to give me any gift that I have absolutely no need for or would ever want. Their taste is a bit more... eccentric than mine. Thankfully, ones 'trash' so to speak is another person's treasure. Thanks to eBay, I actually get excited when my in-laws give me a gift because now I can turn it around and sell it on eBay and then buy what I really want. I created this new user ID (kohavah_mom) so I can sell all these things without my husband knowing- we share a user id and I don't want to hurt his feelings. So far I have sold two items and I have a pile more at home ready to be listed for the holidays. With my profits, I plan to buy a new digital camera so I can send my in-laws lots of photos of their granddaughter! Win win for everyone.
