Miami Beach, Florida in mid-July in 1999 was the absolute worst vacation in my life. Back ground: I was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base just south of Miami from April of 1958 thru September of 1959. During my stay in the late 1950s I had no air conditioning in my car, none in the barracks and Miami Beach had some real sand, fine sand, beautiful sand all along the beach. In 1999 I discovered that it was ground sand and sea shells that were brought in off the bottom of the ocean close to the shore. I viewed the beach as being that of the Utah Salt Flats. In the late 50s the hotels were fabulous. In 1999 the hotel had some memories but much was missing. All I remember of the 1999 vacation was the heat and the beach. I guess the motto is never go back to your old stomping ground, it ain't there any longer.
I have been to Kathmandu about 15 times. It is one of my favorite places & cultures in the world, but I'm not alone. Tony Wheeler, the founder of LONELY PLANET guidebooks also counts it as his favorite and he's been everywhere. Have you been there? How was it for you? I started my entire career as THE HIMALAYAN TRADER after my first visit.
Have any of you folks been to the Azores? The island in the Atlantic Ocean is most interesting, the climate is totally different and the air port run way is an exciting experience on take off. If you have been there did you try the coffee…now that is truly a cup of the most wonderful coffee ever brewed. With the advent of the jet aircraft passenger plane it is unlikely that trans-ocean travel relays on mid ocean stops…such is progress. Anyway, if you have time take a trip to the Azores.
Has anyone visited Berne, Switzerland or Augsburg, Germany? We are an older couple looking for travel saving tips and perhaps ideas on B&B's in each city.

I am hearing on the daily news that the economy has stopped people from traveling. McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is just not as busy as it usually is according to the news and they are saying people just aren't traveling as much.
I can't help but wonder if maybe people just aren't flying when they travel. Maybe they are driving since gas is cheaper right now. Hiked up airline prices, luggage and baggage fees, charges for food, drink, pillows and blankets, restrictions, and the unbearable security checkpoint lines might have something to do with it.
Las Vegas was reported to have an increased number of visitors for New Years Eve even though the fireworks weren't all that this year. Surely, Vegas isn't the only place people are traveling too.

I'm new to eBay selling, but I've bid/purchased in the past few years. I'm quickly learning that it's difficult to tear yourself away from the computer when you've got things to sell!
Anyway, I love to travel ... I'm planning a December 2008 trip to the Grand Cayman for the JazzFest. That's my Christmas present to myself, since I don't have anyone else to buy gifts for.
Well ... I look forward to getting to know some of you!
