I bought a 2001 new beetle and the air bag light is on, but the airbags never deployed and the seatbelts work too. What could be the problem?

the dealership in lewisville texas had the best insight - "you bought a joke car and must stay under warranty to keep it going down the road - that is, unless you dont want your windows to roll down, your convertible top to go down, or your transmission to shift gears or your headlights to work"

that is a quote from the service manager!

so my vw beetle convertible is a joke! a joke on the buyer, a joke to the dealerships and a joke to anyone that just got rid of theirs for an ACURA tsx....thats me.

i have a 2003 beetle - stick - leather - silver with a GREY cloth-top - 30 thousand miles.

each of the front headlights replaced 3 times - dealership scratched my car - poor touch-up

had the wiring harness to brake lights replaced 4 times

the MANUAL transmission fell out at 12000 miles

not 1, not 2, but 3 window regulators out - $300 to $500...EACH.

the MANUAL seat adjustment for up and down movement (ratchet-style) - broken - no repair - replace seat frame - $700

not 1, but 2 cables snapped in a new convertible top - $350 - each cable.

one of the cables snapped while putting down top and the cable wrapped around stupid plastic door that gets out of the way when putting down the top and ripped it off of the car - $500.

this is on a car with 32,000 miles.

when i asked the dealership what vw's frigging problem is with not being able to get the basics down - like a manual transmission and brake lights - they said they are just so highly engineered that well...uh...the stuff dont work.

i asked the dealership what i should tell my wife to do differently when pushing a button to raise and lower the windows so they wont break and cost me $1500 to fix - - - - 2 answers -

1. - stay under warranty - they will break

2. - buy an Acura....thats what i did.

my name is w. a. reid and anyone that has an opinion about VW that is favorable despite the facts you just read - probably hangs on to a hobby or a thought process without really being able to handle the truth - Volkswagen is a chumps vehicle - i dont know anyone that is a returning buyer - honestly.

I mean, C'MON, whats up with the really cheap and stupid idea of spray painting the dash with that black rubber paint that leaves permanent marks EVERY time someone touches it - or even worse, your wife thinks she is going to spray windex on the dash - you ever see a $25000 car with a peeling dash?

same paint different color on the inside door HANDLES! VW wants you to think you are gripping a rubber door handle when you go to close the door, but instead of rubber, how about some grey rubber-feeling paint instead! real dumb. i couldnt believe my eyes when i saw my door handles peeling like a sunburned shoulder - so very lame. there aint no warranty for LAME!

if you buy a vw - stay under warranty! so says the dealerships service teams! that means your car aint never paid for - thats like drycleaned socks! - i dont have the time or money to get my socks dry cleaned and i do not have time for VW and their endless maintenance schemes -

my tranny fell out 5 days after 12000 mile inspection! - the tranny didnt have any fluid in it! dealership called and said "sorry william, you let your transmission go dry and this wont be under warranty" - i quickly pointed him in the direction of my $400 maintenance receipt from a few days earlier where some knucklehead had checked the box for making sure fluid in tranny was good - 2 weeks and a free tranny later i was on my way - but this is the same scenario time and time again.

i knew there was a factory flaw with the headlights imploding and the brake lights exploding - but my dealership kept trying to charge me every time i was in there for new bulbs or new wires - even when they were replaced 2 weeks earlier! and the dealership in Dallas had already told me that the problems with the lights were a free fix from VW - but i guess the lewisville dealership was a little slow in getting that news from corporate offices?
