Well I didn’t exactly grow up in the 80’s (23 years old) but i am still passionate about my 80’s!! I have TONS of 80s artists in my I-Pod like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure and many many more.. Not exactly sure why I relate to this type of music so much but the lyrical content is amazing even though some of the melodies maybe out dated it is still better then the garbage that is on the radio!!
I agree with you, the garbage that is currently labeled rock, pop, etc. is beyond the pale and it started with Kurt Cobain. I stopped listening to pop in the early 90's. Most people tend to hold on to the music of their teen years, yet I find it amazing that those born beyond that decade have discovered the music of their parents. I think those artists whom are rooted in the 80's have created the best music of the 90's, and beyond, i.e. Kate Bush, David Bowie and Peter Gabriel.
I'm more a fan of the rock genre in the 80' era, such as Def Leppard, W.A.S.P., Ratt, Metallica, Slayer and such, but I also like bands such as Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Heaven 17, and so many other great artists...I don't know, but I just get a kick out of 80's heavy metal, Can't get enough of it!
I was a teenager in the 80's and I dont know what I would do w/ out my 80's music. The greatest and most talented bands emerged from that decade and blow all this new crap on the radio away. Bands like The Fixx, A Flock of Seagulls, depeche mode, etc. Still the only music we listen to here.
I couldn't agree more. I started out in the early 80s listening to hard rock, classic rock and Oldies, but by the mid-80s, I became a huge fan of New Wave and punk, too! In fact, most of the concerts I've been to since my teen years in the 80s have been New Wave, and am going this year to see Yaz (never saw them when Vince Clark --- of Depeche Mode and Erasure --- and Alison Moyet were originally together), possibly Squeeze, Echo & the Bunnymen, and if Morrissey tours this fall after his new album's release in September, I'll be there AGAIN (for the 12th time since he's gone solo)! I finally got to see Van Halen (with Dave after 7 times seeing VH with Sammy Hagar and 9 times solo Dave) last Fall, and still go to a local 80s New Wave/Punk/Alternative club and it's usually filled with our generation. Even the 20-somethings that go there know and appreciate "our" music more than the junk being put out today! At least SOME kids today have taste. :)
