I have loved the airstream design since I first saw one! I am determined to purchase one now that I am 53 years old, and camp alot! I DESERVE it ! But , I do have a few questions to ask about the older models from you "old timers". Does the air conditioner run off 12 volt , 110 volt, propane, etc? The original refrigerator ran off propane. Didn't it need electricity too? Was it 12 volt or 110 volt? I camp mainly in sites that have 110 hookups. How feasible is it to change everything to 110 volt? I would still want to cook with propane, but would like to change most others to 110 volt. How about the small propane gas heater that is sometimes mounted under the gas range. Does it heat enough , or should I convert to electric (110 volt) for better heating or gas cost saving? How hard is the conversion on any of these items to make? Also , if there is a problem with the running or tow lights , how hard is it to run down the wires? Are they under the "skins " of the "belly" or in the walls?
Well Kingfish, the first thing you should know is there is a LOT better place to ask Airstream questions: www.airforums.com. You should become familiar with it. I have a 62 Trade Wind, so I'll quickly answer your questions: 1. The AC runs on 110 only 2 . The refrig was a 3-way type. It will run on 110, or 12v or propane. The refrig was designed with a really efficient heat transfer system, so propane alone w/o electricity is perfectly good. 3. You are better off to simply add a portable heating unit rather than trying to convert the old propane furnace, both for value of your investment, and for difficulty. But it can be done, see the airforums archives for how. Remember, the idea is to have your Airstream capable of running independently in any of the 3 power modes, 12, 110, propane. 4. The wires are under the skin of the walls. It is very hard to run them down, although 99% of failures are in the fixtures and the connections, hardly ever the wires. Look at the connections first.
