Several people have determined that peak oil is here. Gas prices are skyrocketing. There are a variety of reasons to leave gasoline as the defacto standard fuel for cars: cost, the environment, oil wars, stop funding terrorism... But if it's not gasoline, then what? In your mind, what is the best alternative fuel and why?
Electricity is the best alternative to fuel because it will always be available. I would prefer an electrically powered car with a small natural gas generator on board for long trips.
Electricity will not always be available. Where do you think electricity comes from? Other natural resources that will run out just like oil. Not just that, but most of our electricity comes from coal burning plants, which pollute the air just as much, if not worse, than burning oil.
Hydrogen is the way to go for now. You don't have to buy a Hybrid or electric car. You can upgrade your own vehicle to get better fuel economy. Yes, you will still have to purchase some gasoline, but the results of an HHO Cell are incredible. Not only do you gain horsepower, you save on gasoline, and you don't pollute nearly as much.
I definitely agree on the previous point made about Hydrogen's potential as a viable fuel source. However, I must disagree when it comes to electricity. Solar power is by far the safest and most reliable source of energy we currently have and it'll stay that way for the forseeable future. Dont worry the sun is not going to run out anytime soon and when it finally does, some few million years or so in the future, assuming that any of us have modded bodies to survive that long we'd be dead as the sun burned us to a crisp long before it actually burned out. Point is the japanese acutally not only already have a prototype solor car but they've also since revised it in 06 (i believe) and you can view it at gizmag.com (eliica is the name of the car). It is my firm belief that somebody or sombodies who stand to lose a lot when combustable engines get left behind actually "killed" the electric car's progressive momentum in this country. Which is why most people have never even heard of it. But hey, dont take my word for it, go see for yourself...
Electric motive power is used in industry because of its efficiency. If it were more ecconomical I am sure they would switch to hydogen fuel cell power. To put an atom seperator on a vehicle for hydrogen fuel is asking a lot just to get a zero emission result. The electric motor emits O3 (ozone) when it is running which would rebuild the ozone layer of the earth a little, but when it is not running it consumes no energy. When the government gives money incentives to citizens instead of oil companies we will put our solar cells and wind turbines up and charge our electric vehicles.
Well for electric cars, Tesla Motors has come out with a Roadster that goes 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds, has a top speed 125 mph, can go about 220 miles on a full charge, and takes 3 1/2 hours to fully charge from a dead battery bank. It's being sold in Europe and the U.S. as a custom order vehicle, base price: $109,000, and they have a store in California and the U.K..
For electricity production, about 10 years ago a guy developed 2 types of solar panels with antennae impregnated in the material to pick up most of the frequencies of light with up to 80% efficiency. There's a glass variety that cost more and last longer, and a flexible plastic type that's cheaper but is expected to break down from handling and exposure to the elements after 1-5 years depending on use. About 5 years ago they started catching on with a number of companies. One such is PowerFilmSolar.com, which will direct you to distributor companies.
