HELP! WIFI laptop causing problems with my C Crane CC radio reception.

I bought a C Crane CC radio plus and it works great, however when I use my WIFI laptop (it’s about 8’ foot away) it causes a weaker signal and static, also when I use the scroll wheel on my mouse I can hear it clicking on the radio. What can I do to eliminate this problem?

I'm not familiar with the radio but let's start with the process of elimination.

Are you able to disable the wifi card? If so, do you still get interference? Can you try a wired connection? Wifi is usually 1.2 GHz to 2.4 GHz. Does the radio receive that high? Or is that where you get interference? If not, the Wifi may not be the culprit.

Some noise may be from the CPU or power supply. Does it have a separate power supply/adapter or just an AC cord? If it uses a separate adapter, try using just the battery when using the radio.

Assuming the mouse is wired, do you have any chokes or ferrite beads to put on the mouse cord? Or try coiling the slack in the cord a few times to make a choke. I think Radio Shack still has chokes available.

Try moving the laptop and the radio around if possible. Sometimes changing position/location makes a difference. Or don't use both at the same time? Laptops are inherently noisy, more so than PCs since there is no metal case to offer shielding.

Do you have an Amateur Radio club in your area? They may be able & willing to help if you don't have any success yourself. Try www.arrl.org to locate a club near you if needed. Good luck.

I would start by checking the ground on your electric system where the laptop is plugged in and where the radio is plugged in. An AC checking plug with 3 lights will run about $9 at Wallyworld. A good ground system will prevent a lot of noise. This is a common problem, esp. in older homes. The mouse problem is a clue on this one. If needed, run a 14ga stranded (more flexible) from the radio and laptop to the ground post close to your electric meter. DO NOT DRIVE ANOTHER GROUND ROD! Another ground rod will make a ground loop allowing a close EMP that was taken to ground to loop back into your equipment.
