I have a walnut cupboard that belonged to my great grandmother handed down to my grandma and to my mom and now me. I have been told it is hand made in the 1800's it stands 7 ft 2 in and is 48 in wide and only 17 inches deep. My grandma told me the back of it is made from the wood of an old covered wagon. My uncle said that the wood is curly walnut. Our family has purposely not refinished so the stain is rather dark. Does any one have an idea how i can get in touch with someone that knows about antique walnut cupboards.
What sort of information are you looking for? Refinishing, appraising, insuring, dating or identifying for authentification---the list goes on.
Generally from what I understand of antiques is that altering or refinishing the piece will depreciate the value of it. I'm no expert, I work wood furniture on the weekends and it's not on heirlooms.
Hi if you can send me a picture i may be able to find something out for you. Sometimes if you restore an old piece it adds to the value if i can help let me know email
You really do need to post some pictures. I would be careful about any refinish, etc. If it really is that old then it's worth much more untouched than it would be otherwise. I've seen may pieces mid 1800's that were worth half as much becaused someone repaired something.
You need to find someone local that can properly identify and appraise it. They would be better able to give you the professional opinion you need. Most of the finer furniture stores or better antique shops offer free appraisals, at least around here. Do be leary if someone offers to buy it from you. Appraisers never do that as a matter of professionalism.
