Hi all. I have a bristol blue antique library lamp. My question is about cleaning. The copper has a couple of hundred years of patina on it that I don't want to ruin. so I just dust. My problem is the pottery base. It has a lot of yellowing. I'm assuming from smoke? Or perhaps a natural yellowing of the glaze? Im not a pottery person and I don't want to ruin the lamp. Any suggestions?
you could try contacting a conservator in your area that may be able to take a look at the item and tell you if it is in fact yellowing of glaze or if it needs to be cleaned. try the American Institute of Conservation, they have a great list of resources.
What ever you do, do not use chemicals at all.I made that mistake! It might be natural yellowing, hard to tell without seeing.I'll try to remember what my grandmother used.If anything try mild detergant.Sounds like a nice lamp. when i find out i'll contact you.
