I would be interested in knowing why other people love Art Deco. What is it you like about it?
Do you collect Art Deco items? What are they?
Does anyone else out there watch movies made in the 1940's and pay more attention buildlings, furniture, interior design and clothes than to the actors and plot?
I love Art Deco because of the way its elegant curves and hard lines contrast with one another. The use of exotic woods, metals and glass, Its very classy and its like eye candy to me. My apartment is mainly modern alot of Italian furnishings Glass and Metal, Leather ect. I am in the process of doing my bedroom and I am going for a total Art Deco look (keeping it cheep as possible, Art Deco is not cheap). I have picked up a few vintage items at good prices in 2nd hand stores and scope out Ebay all the time for more. Yes I too watch old movies and spend more time looking at the surroundings then paying attention to the plot. The 20's, 30's and 40's fascinates me. One of my favorite places to go in Southern California is the Queen Mary because of the Art Deco and the rich past the ship has and once had.
Hello Blackgore:You mentioned the Queen Mary,if you live in or near Long Beach, you can find plenty of Deco atmosphere on and around Pine Street.(Downtown) the buildings have been kept for the most part in original design and materials. It's transporting to just walk around and soak up the atmosphere.
Yes, classy is the word for Art Deco. I believe it was meant to be eye candy, as you put it. Such great care was put in to the quality and design in that era. I love the so called "skyscraper" design that was incorporated into so many things, from wall sconces to table lighters.
One thing I have found on ebay for relatively inexpensive prices are black and white photos, especially of the movie stars of those days, like Bogie, William Powel, ect. The are great for decorating. The challenge is finding suitable picture frames for them.
I don't know why I love Art Deco. It's really an emotional reaction. I agree with what some of the other members have said, but for me, it's just a very visceral thing. I just feel it in my gut. It all seems so sophisticated and charming. I love everything from the architecture to the jewelry and everything in between. I'm sure this isn't much help to anyone. I think I also really like the era of art deco, the fashions, the lifestyle seems so civilized and relaxed and I guess that appeals to me too.
There's everything about the use of light that attracts me. The lines of Deco buildings for example, accentuate reflections and create amazing shadows-it's full of mystery and intrigue. The Deco light fixtures themselves seem to have a glow come from within without revealing exactly from where. From the buildings to jewelry design to furniture, the use of light, shadows and color are incorporated into the design making it more dramatic and sets a mood that fills my senses!
I have always appreciated elegance and a sleek design. My mother totally embraced "colonial" heavy wooden design and had (has) a very brown- gold and olive green decor complete with hummel figurines. As a kid I would clean the house and take 3/4 of the junk off the shelves and try to make it sleeker and more modern. Which didn't go over well with Mom. I collect chrome pieces and Maxfield Parrish. I love the simple statues , pedestals, glass but especially lighting. I think the thing that draws me to Art Deco is the simplicity. II was in Paris some years ago , ahh the Motherland !! Miami is awesome too . I hear that Czechasivakia ( sp*) (too lazy to spell czech) has a bevy of Art Deco cheap ?? I am holding out hope that some day I will be nice to a very old lady who will leave me all her deco treasures in her willl. I continue to be nice to strangers ...just in case : )
