I'm looking to get some new speakers for my apt. Any suggestions? I don't really want to spend more than a few hundred bucks but depending on the price v quality ratio I might spend a bit more on a good investment. Any help is appreciated!
Btw, I've looked at previous discussions in here about speakers. I have a Pioneer receiver, and I understand that using a receiver isn't ideal. I'm new to this so could someone explain that?
hi mccrearym3, receivers are three components in one cabinient.1 a tuner,2a preamp, and3 the amplifierwith all 3 of these in one cabinet, it severely limits control funtions, power output, and sound quality.there are a lot of speakers and speaker loads a receiver simply will not drive or drive with a good sound. mostly because a receiver is severely limited in power output.your sound quality improves as you separate the one component into the respective separate components. ie power amp ,preamp ,and sources such as tuner cd player ,ect.
by the way 200.00 usually wont get much in the way of speakers, but some ideas for good sound for not a lot of cash , epos, energy bookshelf, and some of the vintage infinity speakers. remember there is no perfect speaker and what one person likes another may hate. room size and speaker placement also make a huge difference.
I have been quite satisfied with my Paradigm "Mini Monitors" . A friend got a nice used set for about $200. New they are under $400. When placed on sand filled stands, they have surprising low end for their size. They have a huge sound stage and really nice detail in the high end. Very accurate.
If you closed your eyes, you would swear they were 5 times bigger than they are.
I bought mine after reading an audiophile magazine review which compared them favorably to Italian designer speakers costing $2000.
