I too have a child with Asperger's. He is the middle child at age 10. His older sister is 12 and his younger brother is almost 3 (July). I have found it hard to deal with his symptoms sometimes because he doesn't live with me (that's a story for another neighborhood) and he doesn't want to come see me very often. I leave the visitation in his hands, when he wants to see me he calls and I pick him up. I was just really wondering if information retention is a typical symptom of Asperger's or would that fall under another category. He has been taught, on several occassions, how to tie his shoes and dress himself, but has problems remembering to button or zip up and cannot tie his shoes himself still. I want an expert opinion (parental) on this subject and from what I've read in this forum so far, I'm in the right place. I would also like to know of places that sell shirts and bumper stickers and other items pertaining to Asperger's (I don't want to buy Autism stuff because I feel that would be like claiming my child has cancer because I found a freckle). I hope the questions I've asked make sense to someone and hope any comments I've made don't offend. Anyway, thanx for hearing me out.
I AM NOT A PARENT BUT A SIBLING , MY SIS IS NOW 14 . BUT I REMEMBER SHE HAD PROBLEMS TYING HER SHOES AND EVEN HOLDING A PENCIL PROPERLY . WHEN SHE WAS A LIVE-IN STUDENT AT SILVERCREST CHILD DEVELOPMENT , THEY USED SPECIAL 'DEVICES'' 2 HELP HER HOLD A PENCIL RIGHT . HER HANDWRITING IS AWFUL JUST AWFUL . SHE + I BOTH DID TEACH OUTSELFS 2 TYPE AS WE GREW UP ON COMPUTERS EVEN THO OUR PARENTS BOUGHT A TYPING / KEYBOARD PROGRAM WE JUST FIGURED IT OUT OURSELVES .
I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF SIS IS THE ASPERGERS . I KNOW SHE HAS A ''FORM'' OF AUTISM , AND ALSO A DX (DIAGNOSIS ) OF ADHD, SEVERE . ADHD IS ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER . I KNOW THERES LOT OF TERMS 2 LEARN . AND DRUGS CHLORAL HYDRATE , RITALIN , STRATTERA , ETC .
WE HAVE THREE 3" BINDERS TOTALLY FULL OF HER MEDICAL RECORDS . SHE WAS BORN IN 1994 IN A SMALL RURAL AREA SO THERE WAS NOT A LOT KNOWN ABOUT IT EVEN THEN I GUESS .
A PROPER DIAGNOSES IS STEP #1 I THINK AS THERE IS USUALLY SOME WRONG DIAGNOSIS AS MY SIS WAS MIS-DIAGNOSED AND PUT ON DRUGS SHE SHOULD HAVE NEVER TAKEN .
ALSO , MY MOM IS HANDICAPPED SINCE THE BIRTH BUT CANNOT GET ON SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY DUE 2 MY DAD EARNS TOO MUCH MONEY . MY SIS OUGHT 2 BE ABLE TO GET ON DISABILITY AS THE TREATMENTS ARE SO VERY EXPENSIVE ., BUT CANNOT .
MY PARENTS WERE ACTUALLY TOLD THEY WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF THEY GOT A DIVORCE THEN MY MOM AND MY SIS COULD GET MEDICAL TREATMENTS . AND DISABILITY TO HELP .
I'LL TELL MY MOM 2 CHECK THIS OUT , SHE HAS SOME GOOD DAYS SOMETIMES BUT SHE IS PAIN THOUGH SHE IS ON MEDS TOO . AND GOT EPIDURALS AND WAS ON STEROIDS BUT THAT IS ANOTHER TOPIC NOW ,
