Humphrey bought at thrift store for 25 cents. Is he real?

I have several Beanie Babies that I bought at a thrift store in North Georgia last week. I thought I would look them up on eBay before turning them over to my one year old grand-daughter. The first one out of the bag was Humphrey the Camel. I looked at a couple of sites and I think he may be real. I know nothing about Beanies so I want to ask you here a couple of questions (please). If he is for sure a fake I don't want to bother sending him to be authenticated. Is there any way to tell if the chances are good that he is the real deal? Should I pack him up and ship him off to find out for sure? Is there an easier way? Thanks! J

Hi J,

Unless you are very familiar with beanies and especially tags, it is difficult to tell a counterfeit from a real one.

I have handled innumerable beanies over the years, and sometimes it is hard for me to tell. I in fact, have a counterfeit Humphrey myself.

In the case of first and second generation beanies, where the real thing is worth substantial amounts, it is always better to send for authentication. Most people will not pay the worth of the beanie unless they know it is real.

And always keep in mind, it is againt ebay policy to sell a counterfeit...whether you know it is fake or not. It holds legal ramifications.

In other words, if I were you, I would send it for authentication.

Regards,
Cindy

I sent it to Peggy Gallaghar Enterprises, Inc. for authentication. I paid with paypal and sent it Priority Mail. According to the Track and Confirm service with the usps the package was delivered 4 days ago and I have heard nothing. I have emailed several times but I have no received a response. Now I am worried. J

Hi J,

I use Peggy Gallagher.

It may be a very busy time right now. Usually, you will get an email as soon as the beanie is authenticated, letting you know whether it is the real deal, or if it is fake.

If your delivery confirmation shows that the beanie arrived, I wouldn't worry too much. You should hear something very soon.

Give them to your granddaughter. They bring such joy! We sell them at a flea market for 1.00 each in the summer. We don't want to spend time or money to authenticate. A buck is a buck and we sell lots. Good luck!
