Yes but the question is who is better? Lennon by far pushed the limits more and veared way out of societal expectations of being a singer/songwriter. After the capital records he created his own sound according to his life and developed a completely innovated genre of rock. McCartney was so focused on fighting Lennon for leadership in the band without understanding his very different style. Granted many popular mainstream songs were written by McCartney and he does deserve his success as the others do. Lennon vs. McCartney comes down to basic politics in music. If you appreciate liberal sound, style, and lyrics more than Lennon would appear as the better songwriter, whereas McCartney would hold that key if you apprectiate more conservative, safe songs.
McCartney. Lennon was a great great composer, but McCartney is one of the greatest composers of all time. He ranks right up there with Beethoven and all the rest.
Lennon. Macca wrote well in the group, because he had Lennon as competition. After the break up, Paul released a song called "Another Day". Lennon was asked in an interview what he thought of it. Said Lennon," that's Paulie pickin his nose". I agree.
I'm uncertain either is superior to the other. Lennon and McCartney clearly had tremendous respect and admiration for their respective songwriting skills.
While Lennon pushed the envelope more often toward the edgier stuff, we can't forget who penned "Helter Skelter", "She's a Woman" and "I'm Down".
Those McCartney songs obviously rock as hard as "Hey Bulldog".
I dither between the two like a pendulum... I love Lennon's stuff so much I can't stand myself. But then I hear McCartney perform "Oh, Darling" from Abbey Road and well, what can I say? The Beatles were amazing and will never be duplicated. Thank God for the fabulous long overdue remasters!
