I'm surprised no one has joined this neighborhood yet but hopefully that'll change. I've had birds all my life (budgies when I was a school-aged child living at home) and now I have 34 birds ... mostly cockatiels, three Greys, rosellas, ringneck doves, and two budgies recently adopted from a local shelter.

I'd love to have intelligent conversations about behavior and diet. Join me?

Hello, I live in Norway with my Alexander cockatiel (at least I think thats what she is) named Bimbo- who think she is a dog (LOVES to take a nap under the blanket with me on the couch) and her nickname is the Norweagen word for "kitty" - she "kisses" the dog good night and likes to terrorise my visitors, but I guess that is as normal as it gets ;-)

I have a sanctuary for abused and neglected exotic birds and also rehab wild birds for release, if possible, back to the wild. My 'bird family' consists of 10 parrots and 8 unreleasable doves. One of my cockatiels has bonded to a ringneck dove and she to him. They made googoo eyes at each other for a year until I finally just put them in a cage together. They're a hoot!!

Hello! We're in South Carolina and we live on Lake Murray (a pretty big lake). Anyway, I don't own any birds but I am an avid bird watcher. We have 2 decks on the back of our house facing the lake and I have all sorts of bird feeders on both of them to attract lots of birds. Right now we're enjoying the Golden Finches. They're just gorgeous! Hoping to get some Hummingbirds real soon. I also enjoy taking pictures of them. I have a whole portfolio of nothing but birds, LOL.

Hello! I am so glad to find this, but it's a little confusing getting in...of course it's 3 am too...that could be part of the problem, lol

I have 3 parakeets, all rescues.

Isaac has been with me 5-1/2 years...he is at least 7 years old although the vet has him tagged for about 9...he was rescued from a bird rescue and was neglected and abused. He still has emotional issues and has to be the last one you say goodbye to as you leave the room, or the last one to get kisses. I love him dearly. Isaac is a turquoise guy with a yellow face/head and the shell markings on his back.
Next came Peridot. shewas named that because by calculations she was born in August and she was bright, beautiful green with a yellow head, an opalene. She was named for August's birthstone.
She came from a pet store that was closing the next day. It was a family owned pet store and it is where I used to buy my parakeets YEARS ago. I have kept parakeets off and on since I was 13 years old. The forst parakeet came directly from the breeder. My next parakeet came from this store, but they got their birds from that same breeder. We reminised about Mrs. Rhorkaste, the breeder and we all laughed that she would be about 100 years old about now...

Peridot was with me almost 4 years. Last summer she developed a hernia on her crop. It was completley operable. I trust my avian vet implisitly. She came through the surgery wonderfully. However the hernia was almost all the way around her crop and this did not show on the x rays. It was a very tricky operation but Dr. K did a marvelous job. She recovered and was home about 2 days before we had to rush her back, she started vomiting. She was in the hospital overnight and passed away early the next morning. I still miss her and cry for her. She was my first "little girl" and they are so different from the boy budgies.

Pulsipher came next. He is a violet opaline. Very pretty and his violet gets deeper with each molt. I got him from a shelter in Independence, MO. A four-hour one way drive for me. Petfinder is a dangerous thing, lol. He was a stray.

Pulse is a unique bird, to say the least. He will be with us 4 years in October. He is his own bird, it's hard to describe him. He goes his own way sometimes. I guess that's the best way to put it. He is silly and weird. He is a wonderful addition to my little flock.

After Peridot passed away my two boys were not able to play together outside (everyone is housed seperately).

After about 4 months I was ready for a new little girl and knew that these boys needed that female influence so they would be able to get along. They seriously started to get on my nerves. That is when Isaac got the nickname "Rain Man" and Pulsipher was "Forrest Gump"...two, well, not so bright boys without a girl around let us say...lol

I had an impossible time trying to find a single female budgie on Petfinder. A single male or bonded pairs were all I could find. After an intense search I found a little recessive pied girl in Galena, IL, near Chicago. A five hour one way drive for me.

Yes, I drive a long way for my birds..lol...Isaac was a local adoption though, I must have been off my feed or something that day...lol don't know why I didn't have to drive for hours for him...lol

We (my mom and I) went up and got Farrah--her name at the time. She is a beautiful little thing. Solid, bright white with light blue on the bottom of her front.

Farrah did not seem to fit her so her name is now Ming-Ming, named for the duckling on the cartoon "Wonder Pets" . I thought it was appropriate because Ming Ming the duckling is the only girl. And there are 3 wonder pets. And with Mingy joining the boys, my flock was at 3 again. Perfect. We call her Ming, Ming Ming, Mingy, and Duchess. After the beautiful white cat in the Aristocats. Yes I watch alot of cartoons...(actually the birds get tv all the time, baseball is a big favorite and cartoons of course)

Mingy is very tame, she came tame but went through a period of biting me. Real hard. Leaving bruises...but she is fine now and an angel.

She wants so much to be apart of the boys, but they are not letting her play with them right now.

Monday we are going to the vet for some "attitude adjustment" haircuts ( wing trims) and that should help that!

I could go on and on. I think I have. But I just love my little ones so much. They are seen as disposable, bought as impulse items and disguarded or ignored and they suffer. Some may think me foolish for spending so much to have Peridot operated on. But it was worth every penny. Just because they are small birds, they still feel as much as a big expensive bird and have a right to the same treatment.

I am pretty adamant about that,if you cannot tell. Adopting Isaac and seeing how he had been treated introduced me to the world of animal rights...yes I am a crazy PETA person...:P

I like the bigger birds, but I think I will only ever have budgies...

Hello everyone!
I am the new proud momma of a 27 yr old African Gray named Smokey. My mother had him from 6 mos old till January and she no longer could keep him since she moved into a smaller place, so being his big sister (Im only 40) I could not see him go anywhere but to my home. He was not handled much after about 1 year because he bit my mother rather badly and she became frightened of him, so now I am trying to handle him and get him to enjoy his life. I wont say that she neglected him because she talked to him daily and he was kept in a room that my parents were in all the time. He just was not handled, and it is sad! They sure can be mean he has bit me 2 times now and it hurt like you know what but I love him and I am NOT gonna give up on trying to hold him. According to the vet he is tagged as being caught in the wild and imported and I hear they are much harder to train and alot more aggressive than handfed Grays...does any one know that to be true? He speaks alot and I have a blast teaching him new songs to sing but would really like to be able to actually hold and love on him...I think he deserves that as we all do. If any have advice please, please send my way I welcome it all!

Well its no wonder there are not many neighbors here in Birds of a Feather. I started a discussion and got not one reply. Not even a welcome to the neighborhood. I guess if you dont own a fancy little bird you are not welcome here. At least thats the msg Im getting here. As I think all birds are wonders, I appreciate them with out owning one. So I will start the welcome chain. Welcome to all the owner of these beauties. An a Hugh WELCOME to GRITSSISTERS who like me doesnt own one but appreciates them none the less. I too live near the water on the North Olympic Peninsula and I have the great pleasure of Watching the Bald Eagles that fly overhead. I have not seen the Western Gold finches yet this year, but I have seen one or two hummingbirds already at my cherry blossoms. Happy Bird Loving/Watching

I really don't know how this posting thing works so...I have 2 birds, a b&g and a miligold..no children, just them, which is all I want. I have loved birds since I was 16 and worked in a pet shop. I loved the b&g which I was told never to go by..which of course I did...I loved the way he looked at me when I sang. And there was a african grey that would "shake" my finger when I went to clean the cage...I would have done anything for her. But being 16, I couldn't afford such a thing. Well, when I turned 26 I got my first blue and gold, Desi..then a miligold Sami to keep her company...she died, it was awful, for me and sami..i got another blue and gold sunny, who is the apple of samis eye...he can't get enough of her..they will never be in the same cage..nothing good can come of it...they talk to each other and it is the most wonderful conversation to listen in on.

I too would like to talk to people who have an interest in birds, nobody understands how precious and smart they are unless you have them.

dinaheath I agree...no one knows how wonderful birds are unless they actually are a guardian to one...

I have kept parakeets on and off since I was 13 years old.

They are my children too, I have no human children. Just kids with feathers...spoiled brat kids with feathers ;)

This forum is hard to navigate, I think that's the problem with it. I wish there were another place where it was easier to talk back and forth...any ideas anyone?

Hello, hello!! This does take a bit of getting used to, but it is so wonderful to meet fellow bird-lovers! I enjoy watching wild birdies and had a dear little budgie as a girl named Sunshine--all bright yellow. Now I have 2 dear little cockatiels, Mac and Misha, as well as my constant companion, Chester, a 7 year old African Grey male. He talks up a storm! Calls me a bad bird if I don't pick him up when he wants to get out...also like to tell people on television to "hold on!" or "watch out!" (2 of the 1st things he learned to say.) I just melt when he says he loves me or calls me "Mommy-bird".

Can't wait to hear more about your friends! I am so busy on Ebay (like most of us!!) but this is a nice break.

Hello! I have 2 cockatiels, Spike (will be 15 y.o. this Christmas Eve) and Claude (just turned 10 y.o.). They are total buddies, most of the time. Spike was an "only" bird for the first 5 yrs of his life, so sometimes Claude gets on his nerves. They share a cage and seem happy. Spike used to talk, but Claude is my talker now - his favorite things to say are: "What are you doing, Spike?" "Come here pretty boy, pretty boy....boy"... and variations, such as "Spike, what are you doing?"....all said while staring right at Spike. Pretty funny.
We have a wild flock of parrots in our backyard. Our neighborhood bird farm says they are a hybrid of Mexican Redheads and Lilac Crested Amazons. They're beautiful and make great calling noises to each other. We live in Southern California.

I just welcomed a 3 month old Caique and his name is Paco.
He loves being held and loves to be hand fed even moreso.
He is a sweetie and I'm trying to teach him "up" and "down" for now. Anybody else have a Caique? I'd love to hear from you!
