Hi again, Besides the African Grey (who was a rescue), we are getting an Umbrella Cockatoo with some behavior problems (screaming and his diet has only been seeds) in a week. Nala also had some issues (she is helping me type lol!). I prefer a gentle way to break bad habits, positive reinforcement - and with Nala is was instinct and reading everything under the sun. Any suggestions anyone has to offer would be great. Thanks, Jan
Hi I rescued a umbrella cockatoo three years ago.She was a screamer a feather plucker she had no feathers when we got her ,and bite I still have the scars on my hands .She was also a seed bird took some time but now she is doing well on pellets with seed only as a treat.I think cockatoos need alot of attention and are very loveable. She is now feathered and avery happy bird .I think cockatoos and other large birds like to be on an open perch my birds are out all day on there perch till bedtime. Good luck with your new cockatoo your going to love (him or her) there smart and loveable birds a bit loud but there my favorite but I love my b&g macaw also. You have a african grey? Always wanted one of them how are they are they a loveable bird? Let me know how your cockatoo works out Fran
II am glad your too is doing so well. Corbin is doing well, and we also keep him out of his cage when we are in the room, or bring him out on his perch. I love our CAG - but they are definitely one person birds. Nala prefers my husband to everyone else, but after working with her for two years, she will come over to me, let me pick her up and let me stroke her beak,
I think cockatoos are like labador retreivers - they love to be loved on and CAGs are like cats - they want you on their terms. Nala is very smart, and constantly amazes us with her inventiveness, and ability to learn new things - but she definitely has a mind of her own (and she will let you know it!) Jan
Hi Jan, so glad to hear Corbin is doing well. My U-too Mary is a one person bird she bonded with me only makes it a little hard at times. What does Nala think about Corbin? Mary wants nothing to do Pearl my B&G so I have to give them each a couple of hours bonding time alone each day.Mary is my laid back cudley baby, pearl is my ACTIVE playful baby nice to have one of each.Having six animals I have to say birds are the most demanding animals, Got to go now and play the easter bunny:) Have a Happy Easter Fran
Corbin and Nala have been chattering to each other. Nala gets jealous when she sees Corbin getting loving - then will only let me stroke her beak. Corbin is definitely a high maintenance bird - but he's so sweet! He would not be a bird for new owners. Corbin will go to several people, but I am the one he has formed his strongest bond with. I hope you had a great Easter - ours was quiet. Oh by the way, I get alot of my toy parts, and foot toys from tylerman22. She rescues birds, and is really great to work with. Talk later, I need to take my son to an appointment. Jan
The diet is simple, have a part mixture of new and old foods. Slowly replace old food with greater quantity of new food, until food is replaced. This can take time, so be patient. Offer fresh fruits, veggies, and nuts. CHECK ON TOXIC FOODS before offering any new things.
As for the screaming, I have had luck with covering the cage for short periods of time. Don't reinforce bad behavior! Acknowledging the screams just promotes the bad behaviors.
And cockatoos are snugglers! Have fun with this new bird!
