I recently acquired a 1990 325ic. I has the oil and filter changed and it now has a leak from around the filter. The garage replaced the filter (a Pennzoil) with a Hastings LF15, but it still leaks, to the point of not being drivable. Do American filters not fit this car? (Yes, we did check for the old filter gasket being left behind) I have just bought a pair of Mann filters from an eBay seller, but could there be some other problem?
So it's a spin on type! I find it very odd that certain American filter sizes would be your problem. Mann is more than likely the OEM, so give it a try. Just make sure it is installed properly as well! You should lightly coat the gasket with new oil and install it hand tight, or to some BMW specification. Assuming it's installed properly, you might want to take a look at the housing. It's one or the other.
I got it sorted out. The Pennzoil filter the garage put on was the wrong one,so it leaked. They changed it to a Hastings filter, and I thought it was also leaking due to there being so much oil around and on it. Upon further checking I found it is NOT leaking so everything's OK. Thanks.
