I am wanting to upgrade to a new camera and don't know whether to buy a Nikon or a Canon. Can anyone please tell me what are some of the pros/cons of one vs. the other and I also am reluctant to make such a major purchase on Ebay. Any recommendations, suggestions, Help please! Would like to make a purchase soon.
the bodies aren't all that dissimilar. Either will be a great purchase. What is more important are the lenses you'll buy for the body. look at the lenses you'll use and buy the body that works on the lenses you want. I can't tell you if Nikon lenses are good as I never owned any. I had lenses from my Rebel film body that I wanted to use so I had to buy the Canon body
base your decision on the lenses not the body. personally I'd get a digital rebel and use the savings for better lenses. the lenses determine photo quality more than the body.
The best thing is you can try both camera on your hand and see which one you prefer.
40D is actually newer model and half step more advance than D80. They have two different lens system so it is hard to compare the advantages and disadvantages. But overall 40D is better than D80 in many ways, such as live view, burst shooting, auto focus speed, better build qualtiy etc.
Both are good cameras, but the Canon 40D is well ahead of the Nikon 80 and more of a lower priced competitor to more expensive the Nikon 300. I have extensive use of several Nikon bodies at the weekly paper I write and take pix for including the Nikon D70 and D80. The boss owns a Nikon 300 and it is a great camera, but a bit to massive for my liking. The Canon 40D is a bit lighter, but just as sturdy and just as fast. Your choice should be for lenses. To be honest Nikon and Canon lenses are very competitive. Stay away from cheap glass. You get what you pay for. Finally, the D80 is a good camera costing up to $200 less than a EOS 40D, but the Canon is techonologically quite a bit superior. Its much faster and sturdier and likely to give many years of outstanding service. Picture wise these cameras can all do a good job but I would recommend going for the Canon 40D for its many additional features. I use both Canon and Nikon and you can't really go wrong with either brand.
