I have a kitten, it's already 5 months old. And I would like also to have a dog of "medium" size, and I know only one of my friends, she has white dog&cat, but they were very small when she took both. Has anyone the experience to hold a dog and a cat together? were there any problems? Can you tell about your experience?
Now is the best time to get a puppy, make sure it a breed with an even temperament towards cats. We currently have a six year old Lhasa apso. who is raising our youngest cat Arche is 7 mo. now, and he is best friends with her daughter Catherine who is three.
Our oldest cat was a year when we got our rescue Corgi who was 14 mo. after a couple of weeks of chaos, they became best buddies. All of our cats and dogs get along. They like to chase each other, and the cats torment the dogs.
I have six corgis, two lhasa apsos, and three cats.
You just have to closely supervise them, until the friendship develops.
Have a cat & dog and they get along fine. Both like to eat at the same time My dog is older than my cat. We got him a few months after our other kitty had to be put to sleep because of cancer. Our other kitty was there first when we brought our dog home when she was 9 weeks old. She was raised wth cats. Since she is 16 now, she can be very bossy towards our kitty but for the most part, they get along fine. It can be done without any problems, but I would definitely be there to supervise them.
Yes definately if you look on page 12 of the pictures you should see a couple pictures of my cat with my dog/s. At times it is like peekee is a dog. We have three dogs and two cats. Our Chihuahua and cat wrestle all the time. Definately supervise them for the first few weeks when you introduce a puppy. Good luck!
We adopted a 10 month old black Lab/Newfoundland mix to train as a service dog when my cat was four years old. I won't say the transition went smoothly; it took about a year before the cat no longer hissed at the dog every time he entered the room. I'm with those who say that the earlier in the first pet's life that you get the second, the better.
I have always had dog's and cats at the same time. Right now we have 2 cats and a dog. Sherman, a cat, and Mayzie kinda have a love hate relatiionship. Both are afraid of each other. Mayzie the dog, won't walk past sherman unless I stand between them.
My cat, Pete, was 4 years old when we brought home a Beagle Puppy. They are now 17 and 13 and they love each other...Pete actually cleans Kelly and they nap together....
Yes it is possible! I have a female retriever, whom I rescued first. She absolutely hated every stray cat she saw that wandered into my yard. She even tore up the drapes trying to get at them through the window. Then I rescued a kitten I had found along the road in terrible shape. I took it to the vet to be treated, and wormed, and have huge ticks cut off that were all over it's body. I decided to keep him but worried what would happen when I took him home and my dog, who hated cats, saw him. Well, I was totally shocked to find that my retriever licked and carefully carried the little kitten around like a baby pup, protecting it, and even slept with him. Three years later they are very best friends, still sleep together, no problems, but she still hates every cat she sees...outdoors!
I brought home a 4 mo old kitten to my 12 yo Dalmation, Petra...she loved her kitty right away....that was over 5years ago....Petra is nearly 18 now, and doesn't see too well because of cataracts, but still plays with her kitty, Lily, We added 2 more kittys last year...one adult male and a 4month old female....Ling and Sugar....both rescues...and they were accepted easier by Petra, than by Lily...lol...but within a week of new kitty arriving, all was well again.Sometime the disposition of the dog, even if it's older, will go well with cats
I have both a cat and dog, and my vet suggested its easier when you get them both at a young age. My cat was about 9 months when i got a puppy who was about 1 year. they sniffed, growled for a couple of days but now they play and even lay together. GOOD LUCK just be patient.!
This is my household right now: 13 year-old male dachshund, Guinness. 3 year-old male black lab, Rocky (95 lbs!) 4 year-old male black cat, Ripley. 6 month old female kitten, Lucy (Diva!) 3 month old Blue Rat (yes, rat, you read it right).
and when my brother goes out of town, we "babysit" his 15 year-old male African Grey Parrot.
Mix it all up with a seven year-old female human and it is hectic. But I wouldn't have it any other way!
We have a 12 year old Shepherd/Pitbull mix, a 11 year old Terrier, a 5 year old Bird dog, and a 10 month old Chocolate lab. We also have a 4 year old tuxedo cat, an 8 year old black and white cat, a 5 year old tabby, and a 2 year old black cat. The cats are a bit leery of the lab, but they get along well with the other dogs. The male cats tend to quarrel, but everyone gets along with our female tabby.
Absolutely now would be the time to search for a puppy or young dog. My cat was about 4 years old when I got our first doberman. Now, prior to getting our dobi, I did research and looked for a reputable breeder. My dobi came from a good bloodline of champions; excellent temperment. I think if you do your homework and are willing to perhaps go with a pure bred; you can almost choose any breed you'd like; but of course assure yourself by asking questions. Just remember that there are many dogs out there who have gotten a bad rap. I believe this is because of their bad owners. What matters most is the dog's ancestory and temperment. Good luck in your search...........A dog is a mans best friend!.....:)
We have an indoor cat AND Big Dog ( Lab/Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever mix ) . We did not go looking 4 a puppy , the mom was abandoned + had not been spayed + b4 long was pregnant- we kept 1 puppy. BUT our Femal Cat had been ESTABLISHED in our house + was dominant . also my mom is handicapped + almost always home . We had a professional trainer train our Pup ... just regular Obedience Training it cost around $5OO . New puppy was s.l.o.w.l.y. introduced + NOT forced or pushed n2 each . Puppy also had a large PEN in which She was kept a lot . Someone was always present the 1st 6 months as BuffyCat would have made a nice snack or even mistaken for a toy in her young exhuberance , so vigilance + teaching doggy 2 lie down is NECCESSARY . We NEVER encouraged them to play together + ALWAYS a safe place if BuffyCat felt threatened or for whatever reason . Both pets are also same Gender ( Femal ) . I will write some more on our Xperience with this l8r . it is possible both our Pets are up in years now + slowed down a lot and tolerate each other well . ESPECIALLY our Dog LoVeS our Cat , She goes SUBMISSIVE when Cat walks by + sometimes they will smell each other . Sometimes Cat will touch noses with Dog , Dog's attitude is always friendly , tail wagging , submissive , . They will never be cosy or be best Friends but they both live in the same space with no injury or fighting or territory issues . This is a most interesting Topic ! %%%peace^^^ K: ) p.S. i hope 2 write more l8r but i have 2 do some FeedBaX + some ChoreS REMEMBER FRESH COOL WATER + CLEAN BIRDBATHS 4 FEATHERED FRIENDS + take Care of Urself in this hot weather .
