Although I do love All animals, cats seem to be so much more intelligent than other domesticates. They try to analyze situations and truly attempt to communicate with us. And talk about Catitude....

We just returned from a long weekend and all the 8 boys were just fine. Everyone was very well behaved while we were gone. No lamps were knocked over (this time). No mail or newspapers were shredded. The toilet paper was still on the spool (this time). Everyone seemed glad to see us and came running to the door.

My dog will get into the cat boxes and eat the kitty poo. My cats don't do that!!! And I agree, you can leave the house for the weekend and the cats will be just fine. You can't do that with the dog however. You can't even trust the dog alone out of the cage during the day.

This was another road-trip weekend for us and we missed being able to take the cats with us. They just don't travel well and howl when they get in the car or truck. They are very well behaved when we leave them for a couple of nights, but I miss having a kitty or two (or more) curled up on my bed with me!

why would you leave your pet alone for 2 days?

Over the past 30 years of owning cats, we have discovered that they really do not want to go with you on your trip. They prefer to be at home, surrounded by familiar things. One time we were away for about a week, so they had to be boarded in the cat condo at the vet. They came home with fleas. So now they stay home for up to two nights alone. After that, a cat sitter comes on alternate days to brush and feed everyone, replenish the water, and replace the sand. The guys do just great, but I miss them!

I have 5 cats. Two elderly, one mamma, and two kittens. I also have one dog. I don't know that I could leave the latter three alone for more than a few hours, they tear up the house as it is.

Woofy loves all of it, she has her moments where she will act like a cat herself. The cats enjoy and tolerate her intermitantly. They all follow me around, I am surrounded by pets all day.

I agree with former poster, cats are not quite as portable as dogs. My old cats do not tolerate strange situations/places well. I can take Woof just about anywhere as long as I don't leave her for too long.

If you're keeping a dog in a cage for short periods of time in conjuction w a training program I don't see a problem, but to have a dog or puppy routinely caged for long periods of time due to their behaviour or as a 'preventive measure' sounds ... troubling.- Get a Trainer People. And learn how to training methods for good behaviour. and Get a Trainer !.

dustycheeriomom, I agree with *sweet*molly*malone* on the idea of caging a dog. It is awful restricting and dare I say cruel? Just my opinion.

In general: Leaving a cat or cats alone for few days is fine with me as long as you have someone come by twice a day to properly feed them, give them fresh water and check them over. This is something I have done many times over the last 10 years. I often have friends stay over to care for them too.

But not all cats have an issue with traveling. Some like cars and travel, though from my experience this is far more the exception than the rule. But our cat Leo will come with us if both of us go on a trip, and if I go somewhere alone (on a family visit) he comes as well. He NEVER EVER stays home without one of us there. Of course he is a special case and has physical problems from abuse from his original owner and he suffers grand-mal seizures and cannot fend on his own well. He had become very dependent on me and if I go away on a trip for more than 2 nights he has ALWAYS had 1 or more grand-mal seizures, even though Donna is home with him. Gets very distressed if I leave. So he is well traveled and has flown from Montana to NJ at least 5 times, and Chicago to NJ at least 6 times in his life. Wow, he has traveled more than some people I know. ;)

Cheers,

David

I agree, they are much cleaner, you dont have to walk them, and they are just as loveable as a dog. My Saxie Kitty gives me love all the time.

I will start with “I am not a dog person, but a cat person”. But why is one better than the other? Does do not have to be walked, you walk them because they cannot run loose, unless you are lucky enough to have a fenced in yard or 300 acres. But on the other hand, you can take a cat for a walk too. I used to walk ^Hamlet^ on a leash. Cats are simply just a different species, with different needs, wants, desires and modes of operation. Some of you said cats are smarter, they analyze better, says who? Show me the scientific proof, there is none really. National Geographic had a great issue last year with a huge article on animal intelligence. If you can locate it, it is well worth the read.

Cats are more independent, I give you that, but in the wild they are not social animals. Dogs are. Except for lions, in the WILD cats do not live in groups and hunt in packs. Dogs do. And I am sure the members of the Dog Neighborhood would claim that dogs are smarter because they work with each other and help each other.

Why is it important to lay claim of one species over another? For those of you who do this, do you also lay claims of intelligence of one human color or type over another? I hope not.

Just my opinion.

Although most cats would be fine alone, the problem arises if one should get sick. It is always best to either board your cats, or have a professional cat sitter look in on them. If they get into a toxin, or a male cat "plugs up", there is very very narrow window of opportunity to save the cat.

As far as difference between dogs and cats, on main difference stands out to me. Dogs will roll in and eat deer, goose, horse, and cat poop. They will eat and roll in old road kill. A cat would never do that. That is why my cats can "kiss" me, but the dogs, well, you never know where that tongue has been.

As far as convenience, if I am gone a long time, the cats can use the litter box, the dog pees on the floor. I know most dogs will try to hold it, but they can only last so long, and it is not fair to the dog to expect him to wait that long.
