We recently found out our kitty Phoebe is diabetic. We are lucky as we do not have to do the insulin with her as yet. Our vet has told us to feed her only canned Fancy Feast. We have a list of the types of Fancy Feast she can have. All are low carb. and gluten free. Does anyone else know of any other common canned brands that would be low carb. and gluten free?
There is a diabetic food from Royal Canin! You can only get it from a vet. I have worked in this feild for 10 years and i have never know a vet. to say eat Fancy Feast!!!
I am a Veterinary Technician in Hawaii. We see A LOT of diabetic cats here and you are very lucky that you don't have to do the insulin or fluid therapy yet. But feeding her Fancy Feast probably isn't the best choice. Hills / Science Diet makes a food specifically for diabetic kitties it is called (m/d). Your Vet should carrry this food or at least be able to tell you where you can pick it up (because it is a prescription diet).
I had a diabetic kitty for over 10 years- I think the reason the vet recommended Fancy Feast was because it is meat without corn or rice fillers. My cat was part of a study for a special food for diabetic cats many years ago and that was when I first found out to feed him meat. All you need to do is check the label for grains, they raise the glucose levels. Try Whiskas Choice Cuts or Little Friskies both in pouches and watch out for dry food-most are cereal products first. My Bud Kitty only got canned food with dry treats after his shots (the semi moist have corn syrup in them- a big no no) If you need any further help, I have some pretty serious experience!
We just found out last fall that one of our 15 year old kitties has diabetes. Our vet recommends Purina DM (Diabetic Management) dry and canned food. It's not cheap, but it's just what she needs. Our little girl isn't on insulin, thank heavens! But our vet prefers for her to also have canned food in her diet. She gets canned food everyday.
My kittie, Pete, was diagnosed just over 2 years ago....He is on insulin twice a day and we have to be VERY careful about his food as he has had two urinary blockages....
I hadn't heard of the Fancy Feast recommendation...I get Pete's food from the vet..........
You are very lucky to control his condition with diet!
My sister works at a vet hospital. A person came in with their cat to have it put to sleep because it was diabetic. They left the cat there because they no longer wanted it. The vets did NOT put it to sleep, but instead started it on a special diet and today the cat is healthy and totally diabetic free! So this CAN be cured with proper diet. They did not have to put the cat on insulin. They cured it totally with proper diet.
