we have a cat shes going on 16 years old and shes spoiled rotten she meows every two hours for food my wife feeds her and then the cats gone back up in the spare bedroom and sound asleep for two hours if your lucky then she starts all over meows for food eats and up in the spare bedroom and back to bed everyday its like having a child that never grows up my wife now fills the bowl with dry cat food at night to curve he of waking us up every two hours my neighbor tells me she simply has a squit gun and when the cat wakes he at midnight for food she squits him with a few shots of water she says she needs her sleep to do you think is thats mean ??
I don't know if squits water to the cats is mean or not, but my cats do wake me up all hours of the night, but I don't think it's for food, since they always have food in their bow. I think they just want some attention since I am gone all day long, and they did nothing but sleep all day. I didn't do anything to them, just reach over and gave the a hug and went back to sleep and be dead tired for the next working day haha.
Well, my kitty, Ornery eats on a schedule (hers). When she's hungry, she will do anything to get my attention. When she gets my attention, she leads me out to the utility room to her dish. I feed her. After that she usually takes a nap. Although, sometimes she will want to rough house a little before nap time. She too, is very spoiled.
Squirt guns definitely aren't mean - they're an effective (and humane) way to train cats to not do something. Squirts of water don't hurt, it's just annoying. But it's important avoid soaking your cat. If a cat is so wet he can't dry himself off within a couple minutes of licking, then he can get sick. That's why, if you bathe your cat (which I never do unless they get poop on themselves), you have to dry them 100%
I totally agree with rachelofzu, water sprayers or squirt guns are not harmful to cats and if used when they are young and mischievous, it teaches a cat to not use certain behavior...I have owned cats my entire life and most have lived very long lives...Each one was gotten in the first 6-8 weeks of age and learned quickly that a water sprayer would be used if they scratched furniture of got into something they shouldn't...But one year of age, I didn't have to "actually" spray the water at them, just shake the bottle and it still worked...ALL my cats learned tricks, which surprises me to this very day and a few would even "go to their beds" when asked...Please keep in mind, all my cats were indoor cats and I am not sure how useful water sprayers or squirt guns would be on indoor/outdoor cats...I have never used a squirt gun, most are too strong a spray, but have found that standard water sprayers, like the adjustable ones for plants work well...As for wanting food all hours of the day and night and meowing for no reason, most cats do a lot of meowing when close to or in heat, females are more vocal then males and older cats sometimes "need" that extra bit of special attention as the years go by...My one 9 year old female will call for me at odd hours, just to reassure her I am there for her, my late 14 year old male would come to me at odd hours the more often as he got older and my 2 year old female currently just struts into a room whenever my 2 huge pups are around to play with them and remind them she too has a stand in the house...I do give a lil extra attention to the older cats, their need for cuddling is dear to my heart, sometimes just giving them that lil extra gets them playing like kittens again...It's adorable...
If your cat's 16 years old, chances are it's senile and forgot it ate! My cat became senile at 19 and did the same thing. Squirting a 16 year old cat isn't a good idea! It's like punishing a senior citizen for not being aware of things.
I think it means your wife trained your cat well. If every 2 hours I begged for money and your wife handed me a $20, I would be living at your home begging every 2 hours. She has reinforced the behavior.
Tell her to stop doing it when your cat begs. Since the behavior has now been reinforced so well, it will take a long time to reverse it, but simply stop. After a month to 6 months the behavior should also stop.
I do not agree with squirting him when he begs. He he associates the begging with food, do you want to risk him also associating food with being squirted? if that happens you may not be happy with the new behavior or refusal to eat. I personally suggest taking the high road and retraining him. No food except at meal time. Period.
Has she just started doing this or has she done this all her life? If this is a recent onset, then I would suggest you take her to the vet to rule out any kind of illness such as diabetes. Since she's 16, she's getting up there in age and all kinds of diseases can start. Just to be safe...
