My cat is very sweet but very strange, he sometimes meows for what appears to be no reason he dose this out of the blue, when everything is calm and no one is talking around the house he will suddenly start meowing repeatetly, dose your cat do this too?
Useful Funny
Hi goose3678,
Why would that be strange? I mean, assuming he is not in pain or has a neurological problem requiring a vet visit, consider people…
Have YOU ever talked to yourself, even if someone I around? Sang to yourself? Thought out loud? Yelled at someone from inside your car (the other party being a bad driver in another car)? How is that different? Or perhaps he is trying to initiate a conversation with you or a play session. Haven’t you ever been sitting in a room and someone walks in and starts to talk to you?

I say your cat seems perfectly normal, again assuming it is not caused by a medical issue. :)

Our cat Apollo loves to run into the loft, stand on the banister that over looks the kitchen, and meow LOUD. He will repeat this till one of use goes into the kitchen and looks him in the eye and say “Hello” or “Hel-low”. He then will try to say “Hel-low” and by God it SOUNDS like it, the double syllable and all! He will sit there quiet till you say it again, and he repeats it. Then if we look at him and say “Come down” he runs long the banister to the will where we have carpeted beams that zig-zag up the wall for the cats, and he runs down the beams to the dining area, into the kitchen and rubs against your leg. I mean this is not random thing, it is quite planed and thought out by him and he had some it for a couple of years. Just last night I had a Hello session with him, though he got mad because I said Good-Bye a few times and then sang “Hello hello, I don’t know why you say good-bye I say hello”. That was not part of his game and he will just meow louder if you do not play it right.

Cheers,

David

I have a Maine Coone cat named Bailey and he talks all the time. Do you talk to your cat at any time? Maybe he/she is conversing with you.

Cats can make over 100 vocal sounds unlike dogs that are very limited. My nina always says HI when she greets me on the sofa. She also pronounces OUT and MmmmCK for milk by the fridge. I swear she's smarter than some toddlers. Is your boy fixed? This is breeding season and he could be catterwawling. Crying out for a mate to find him. My big boy is fixed and he'll do it in the garden. When another cat responds, he defends his territory. Or he'll try to mate anyways. He was two years old when he was neutered. He's a big bully too.lol He won't let my mom garden in peace. He must know and supervise all changes to the flower beds.

I've known cats to meow for no visible reason. Also like the other poster said, I've seen an unfixed male cat meow indoors during mating season.

One girl cat who lives with me finds socks in the laundry basket and carries them around the house while she makes loud and pitiful-sounding meows. Maybe the fat fuzzy sock seems like a critter to her (although she's never hunted outdoors) or else she just loves the taste of socks! Maybe having something in her mouth causes these meows to sound different from the empty-mouth meows.

I wanted to film our cat Apollo doing the "Hel-low" game I spoke of in this thread and on one other once. He started playing today and I grabbed my camera and turned it on! However, it was the 1st use in about a year and I got about 40 seconds before the battery died. :( The best parts are not in the video, but he does say "Hello" 2 times fairly clearly (well, for a cat saying it). If you have interest, I posted it in my cats website messageboard (since I cannot post videos here). Go to http://www.coolcybercats.com/messageBoard.asp and look for the message titled "Here is Apollo trying to talk!" and click on the title to see the message with the embeded video.

No, not really. My fur babies Always have a reason to meow/talk. You really should answer him when he talks to you. You'd be amazed at what they have to say. My oldest-Scout @ 17years old has a plethora of different sounds she emanates and we've come to learn what she wants, whether it's to go outside to sun on the patio, or to open a closed door. And not only that, but the other 2 cats recognize what she's saying and always come running when she asks for food! LOL!!!

Our little guy cat Oscar sometimes hollers for no apparent reason. We will go racing over just to check on him to see what in the world is the matter. Nothing ever is. All the others have their own little cat chat voices. Mango is really vocal and walks around "buzzing" - as I call it - sort of a trill or hum and purr and soft growl all at the same time. It is a cute little noise, which he manages to evoke without any apparent reason.

Mine all do that at some time during the day. But mostly they are meowing for some reason, like get me fresh water, get me fresh food, clean the litter box, geez, they are so demanding!!

Oh - I have 2 cats - applehead (traditional) Siamese Dusty - he talks all the time. Asks for food, responds "Hi" back to me, tells me "le-meow-in" let me in, le-meow-out - let me out, and many other vocal expressions. He also sits on the command, sits "here" at the exact spot, and also fetches and returns, gives high fives, and requests to use lint roller on him all the time. And I have another cat - he is Maine Coon I think - he kind of got himself adopted into our house - and he talks all the time as well. Oh I know, I talk to them all the time too - so I guess they respond the best ways that they know how. Cats are very intelligent, and can be rather then trained - taught different tasks. They have to want to do it though - on their own terms, and it's a game to them. Also, I think they do play jokes, and understand humor. And even laugh and give big smiles. And each cat is different - just like people.

I have 11 cats. A few cry at various times and for different reasons. Sometimes to go outside, sometimes for food and sometimes just to be cuddled and loved. I have one Himalayan, roxie who cries, I believe, because her sister Autumn was stolen and she misses her-they use to snuggle up and sleep together. So, I give her extra cuddle time now and then.

Goose3678,

I think that's really cute. I have two kitties and one is very talkative, and even more so lately, it seems. She does the same exact thing your describing- waits until its really quiet and then out of the blue starts meow-ing away! And she gets pretty loud too.

Usually (when she does this), I will talk back to her, go to her if I can & pet her and she seems to love that! I agree with some of the other post replies here, cats are much smarter and in-tune with the world around them then we often give them credit for. Maybe our kitties are just yapping away like we all do sometimes!! I know cats will do many things to identify with their beloved owners. They really do love us sooo much!

Hmmm. Cats are smart. There is always a reason.
The owner just might not know exactly what it is!
