hello, I am new here in the cats neighborhood but not to ebay. We have 6 cats -1 outside and 5 inside-Pheobe,Leo,Piper,Cole,Miley & Astrid. My daughters are fans of the show "Charmed" where they picked most of the names as you can see-lol! 3 of those kittys are newcomers from the stray who just recently set up her home outside while she was pregnant w/ our new guys. Now we need to get them all fixed (including mommy outside as she has already had some male visitors), my question is does anyone know a place that fixes strays and rescues cheaper in the New York City area cheap or is that not a good idea? I have heard some stories that the cheaper places are like factories w/ just one animal after another and then some people say there fine. I would love to hear from all the cat-owning friends in the neighborhood on this subject. Also what would be a good way to catch our Astrid in the back -she lets my husband pet her but will jump if he goes to try and pick her up.So in order to fix her she needs to be caught and we already tried the cage trap w/ food.Any suggestions on this matter too. Thanks so much, Daniela
I'm new to the neighborhood too. I watch a LOT of Animal Planet, and I think that the ASPCA in New York City can hook you up with free or low cost spaying and neutering. I would contact them if I were you and see if they can steer you in the right direction. Also, other than live traps I don't know of any other way to catch Astrid. Good Luck!!
Hi Daniela, Welcome. Many area have "fix" events that are low cost. They do it out here each year. The rule is that it is generally okay and works, and allows people who may not be able to afford to do it, get it done. At the same time since it is an assembly line setup and there is, in MY opinion, minimal care given, a chance that things go wrong. I like to track the ones they do here and find that each time there are a few animal losses. Either during the surgery or a couple days after. Now the loss rate out here is less than 1%, but still, there IS a loss rate. In the end I tend to think that you get what you pay for. Cheap cost = cheap fix.
But if you cannot afford it any other way, then it is not a bad idea.
Many vets also will work on costs with you. Try contacting a few and explaining the situation and see what they can do. Also, contact City Kritters (I believe citykritters.org) in NYC and see if they can point you in a good direction. Geri mentioned ASPCA above this post, another great idea.
I'm in Central NJ...I used to live in NYC & know that the cost of the sales taxes are more expensive. If you don't mind travelling to central NJ, my vet could help. As Geri suggested, I found him through one of those ASPCA places...I think FRIENDS OF ANIMALS was the name of that place. Let me know & I could refer you to him. He might even give you a multi-cat discount! Diane
Thanks to all who responded and gave some good advice. As for the last reply in jersey, I would love to know a name and what program he specializes in. Thanks so much Daniela
Hi, We have 16 cats. 4 inside and 12 outside. The Humane Society helped us in spaying and neutering all but our first 2. We contacted them and they sent us a certificate made out to the vet of our choice. They paid $50 for females and $30 for males. We live in VA, so they may pay more in N.Y. As for catching a stray. We used a laser light for a few days to distract our last cat and stood behind a pillar on the porch and scooped her up when she came around the corner. For another, we ran him straight into the large carrier with the laser light. Our cats will follow that light anywhere. Please check for your nearest Humane Society. They are a lifesaver. Hope this helps.
WOW, SIXTEEN cats! I have trouble keeping up with my herd of eight! How do you manage to keep the litter situation under control? They recommend one sand box for each cat, plus one more. How many litter stations do you have?
