I have had a good result from using Cat Pheremone with 3 cats. It very much calms the cats and decreases tension. Anyone else in the neighborhood of cats tried this?
Hey there, Cathy! Yes, I have eight indoor boys and use the Feliway brand. I try to keep three diffusers plugged in all the time: one in the living room, one in the upstairs hallway, and one in the sunroom where they boys like to gather.
I have been thinking of trying cat pheremones in my home.
I have just picked up a stray who has had kittens in my care and my oldest cat is just livid. She is a little nuerotic anyway, but the latest additions seem to have put her over the edge. Right now I have the lot of them on Bach Flower Remedies, which seems to take the edge off, but not quite with the results I would like. Plus I can't continue it on a prolonged basis.
Does anyone know if pheremones can be used on a continual basis? Is it expensive to start and maintain?
I hope that I won't have to use this stuff forever because it is pricey. My three young gingersnap kittens aren't really kittens any longer. Even though everyone is neutered, there is a periodic confrontation where a pair is fighting for dominance. Fur flies and there is a vocalization that makes your hair stand on end, but they just have to work it out amongst themselves. When the fighting started, I bought the diffusers, and it really helped to calm things down. In a few more months, all 8 will be a full adults and everyone will know their place in the pecking order. Then I will stop plugging these things in and see if everyone remains happy.
I have been using Holly (Bach Flower Remedy) on my cats. It is supposed to be good for jealousy/sibling rivalry. When I brought the new cat in everybody got some. It helped everyone calm down so that they could get used to each other. I also use Rescue Remedy for traumas or emergencies. The flower remedies are homeopathic. They work well enough. I stick a couple of drops in the water when things get a little crazy here. May work for emergencies when you unplug your pheremone diffuser.
Yes I tried it when the third cat came to live with us. It helped take the edge of their nervous behavior. They finally got used to the third cat after a few months, now she's like one of the gang.
