I was just now watching the Martha Stewart show where a lady cat expert said that routine vaccinations for our adult cats are bad for their immune system..She said they should have the kitten vaccines but after that it only stresses they bodys....After my Lulu passed, I did some research on cancer in cats and did read that 1 in 4 cats will get cancer from vaccination they received as kittens....So what is one suppose to do?.....Has anyone else heard of this?

Hi Janice, Jan, may I call you Jan? My cat (MzMouse) is 17yrs. I just took her to the vet last week. I asked if I should have her booster shots. He said that he quit giving cat booster's once they reach adults. I didn't ask why, and he didn't elaborate. I will call and ask. And please except my most heart felt sympathies in lossing your Lulu.

Sincerely,
MzMousesMom

Hi MzMousesMom,
You can absolutely call me Jan.......and I so much appreciate your condolence for my Precious Lulu....It was a week today that she went to Rainbow Bridge....I miss her so.....
I have two 3 year old kittys too, so no more shots for them. We try to do the best we can for our babys, not thinking we might be doing the wrong thing. Please let me know what your vet says and Thanks again for your response..

Hi, Janice!
My Vet also discontinued some of the vaccines after advancing maturity. The county requires the rabies vaccine annually, but after Kitty became diabetic, they stopped administering everything else that might be too stressful. It probably just depends on your cat's overall health, whether it is allowed to go outside, and whether it is around other cats. There is a lot of stuff on the internet, both accurate and false, so it is best to speak to the vet, or contact the professors at the University's Veterinary College. They often have a hot-line and accept questions via email. Talk show "experts" sometimes lead people astray with their babble or sensational-speak for ratings.
I taught college level physiology and the things that average people believe CAUSE cancer are sometimes just plain crazy notions. Please don't get caught up in the hype. In general, cats are subject to other common ailments and are more like to contract harmful diseases if they do not get vaccines.

My older cats do not get any shots and vet is fine with that I only get rabies vac for cats that are under the age of 15, I use to get the the other vac. but they would get upper resp. infections so I stop those and none of my cats have ever had resp. infection. None of my cats had cancer just me(HAHA)

I've heard the same thing about cats getting cancer from their annual vaccinations, and my vet also has read about it. He gave my kitten, Hoshi, her kitten vaccinations in her leg because he said the vaccinations given in the neck/shoulder area are those that mainly cause the problems. He also recommended not getting vaccinations or getting them as often if the kitties don't go outside and/or aren't exposed to strange kitties.

This whole idea is rubbish. It sounds like one of those urban legends! Your cat should be vacinated as a kitten and once a year as an adult cat. Have you ever seen a cat die of distember? It is a very distressing site and a simole vaccination prevents it. The so called cat lady is a complete fraud. She is probaly on of these animal rights peope and has wierd ideas. All my cats have lived long healthy lifes because of vaccinations. If you love your cats get them vaccinated. If not it does not matter.

Dennis a cat lover.
