Does anyone know of a web site that has details about the reclining b/seat. My friend said they were in 66-72 and all came with the side back release except the 66. I say it was only 66-68. I'm sure you all have an opinion but i would really like to find proof. Can anybody help?
your friend is correct. the reclining bucket was an option generally teamed with the power driver seat. the first one was in 66 and did not have a seat release as that feature did not appear until 67. beginning in 69 seat releases were on the rear rather than on the side. reclining seat was available in the full size cars and began appearing on the mid size cars in 69. it was also available in the "strato bench" seat-a hybrid bucket-bench seat with a built in arm rest, they never appeared in the budget cars-corvair, nova- or F bodies as those cars had different seats. they are hard to find and expensive but a neat and useful option. they can be retrofitted on any bucket seat car by a good upholstery man. usually the cylinder goes bad-it seizes up or breaks. replacements cannot be found so you better have a good set up or else. i have had one installed in my 67 chevelle and it works and looks great. the only part that gets switched is the seat back-your seat bottom is reusable and if done right you can reuse your original seat covers with no problem. the procedure is the same on the strato bench seat. there are 3 different styles: no seatback release, side seatback release, and back seatback release so you need to have the correct style for your application. there is no guide on this. you have to check all the original GM manuals and literature. I waited for years to find one because they are so rare and good ones are even rarer.
I have seen the 66 no side release seat .and i have seen the 67 or 68 seat with side release recliner seat. i have not seen a 69 to 72 recliner seat center back release seat .
I could not resist the discussion on recliners on Chevells. 20-25 years ago I used to collect and sell these recliners converted some and sold them on hemming motor news some of you may remember me. If anyone knows abut these seats there is no one but me there may be few others that know but these people are as rear as the seat itself. Some of my friends and buddies laughed at me when they saw me taking them off in the wrecking yards. Lets go back to 66 GM they did make them and I have sold and may have few still. 69-72 I have taken some off and I still have some to they are the same as the 68 with the optional head rest I never looked at them truly at the time they looked the same I just wanted to keep them as I was addicted to them. They are all in storage for now they may go on sale in a year or two if I ever decide to sell. Just for knowledge if you think 66 was rare think again out of the 40 recliners that I taken out I only remember taking one out of 69 never seen or found one on 70-72. Did you notice I used GM above because I don't remember taking any recliners from a Chevy. Although in Chevrolet manuals recliners are shown but Recliners in a Cevy is very very very rare. Every time I see one on a Chevy I have my doubt if that car came with it. My 68 Chevell has recliners on both front seats I will be taking the driver side out when I begin restoring it I was to obsessed at the time when I put it on. I would like to here from anyone about recliners but I'm using my wifes account It may take some time to answer any questions.
