Hello. I recently purchased a 1985 Corvette (350ci\ 4-speed automatic). I was hoping there would be a group of us Vette collectors in here...and sure enough. Just thought i'd stop by and say hello. I am in the process of restoring her to running condition(She has sat abandoned for 10 years) so if you've got any tips for me let me know. This is my 1st Vette so I am a little wet behind the ears as far as corvettes are concerned. What octane of gas is appropriate for these cars?
Welcome! I own an 88 4-speed automatic. I burn only premium in ALL my cars to include my Toyota. I don't like the way the anti-knock systems work. They sense the beginnings of a knock and have the computer retard the timing to stop the knock. Result? Loss of power and poorer gas mileage. I also found that when i removed the heads, that the tops of the cylinder walls is wavy from the slight slapping of the pistons. Many may disagree. My answer, why not just pay a few cents more and use the good gas? Performance engines must run higher octances for a reason right? I also run nothing but synthetic oil. Mobile One is readily available and at reasonable costs. Costco, Sam's Clubs and Wal Mart all carry it. Again, pay a little extra and reap the benefits.
Hi there I have a black 1985 z51 350 4 speed and this is also my first Corvette. I put 17" chrome zr1 wheels on and what a difference. I also asked for alittle engine help and got some very good tips. My wife says It really doesn't need the help because it's fast enough. How ever there's no such thing as to much horse power or your tires are to fat. Good luck and when someone ask you when you turn your car on does it return the favor. You can answer ABSO$#@&*^$LUTLEY
Congrats on your '85 'vette!!! I have an '85 ... an '87.... and a '75 ...... working on restoring my '85 since the other 2 cars are finished. I would recommend getting on Corvette Forum message board... lots of help when you come across something that is hard to fix. I strongly suggest getting a factory service manual... they can be complex to understand but can answer almost any question. All Corvettes are wonderful cars... they are addicting to many of us. Some don't like the C4's... others absolutely love them. Hope to see you on the Corvette Forum!
Welcome. My first corvette was also an 85. (first year of Tuned port injection if i remember correctly) I reccomend premium for all corvettes. If you can get 93 octane that's the best. If you can only get 91, that will work, but you may have to back off the timing a little.
