My 1978 Chevy Malibu just came out of the body shop from a great restoration on the body...the body is finally GORGEOUS! ! ! With that said, I'm running a 355 small block, turbo 350 3 spd tranny, with 411's in the rear end. My problem is im doing 3500 - 4000 rpm on the highway at approx 60 mph. I know this can't be good for the engine and tranny. I'm looking to update either the tranny or the rear end to todays technology and highway rpms. Any Suggestions?

I would put in a overdrive tranny. That way you do not loose any performance. You should gain a little, because the overdrive trannys have a lower first gear than your th350.A 700r4 should bolt wright in.Depending which tail houseing is on your th350,you might have to change your driveshaft length.Good luck.

Tranny for sure, but will a 700 really fit right in?? I thought the tail mount was in an unusual location? the 2004r is laid out with the tail mount at the same point as a turbo 400. either way you'll need a new driveshaft and yoke. many 70's frames were setup for both a 350/400 trans just by moving the crosmember

Maybe consider a bolt-on overdrive unit, like something from Gear Vendors.
