First ...was it running and then stopped? If it was running...check for spark. If you have spark and fuel ,odds are your timing jumped. If you have not been able to get it running since a major overhaul you probably stabbed your distributor off. Feel free to contact me...
hi, My first question...ya, was it running then quit ? or one day wouldn't start?.. or just didn't start after you changed the carb? second question...why did you change the carb? ( more importantly ...does it start if you change the carb back??) ya check spark , and dwell inspect the distributor cap for cracks especially around the center tower from the coil is there voltage to the coil in the "crank" AND "run" key position??(ignition switch or resistor wire corroded in the "run" position won't leave enough voltage to the fully charge the coil .look for 8-9(i think) volts in "run" ) Are the spark plugs wet after a period of cranking, and if they are do they smell like good clean gas or foul pond scum like bad gas if this has a real uneven or unusual cranking you may have indeed jumped the timing chain as mentioned earlier.....especially if if backfired once and quit.
agree with wyo_tech. sounds like a timing issue. make sure points aren't pitted. and are properly set. also check to make sure distributor is not cracked or contacts there too carboned up. had several impala sixs, two had moisture condensation as fall temps set in. if in doubt replace points rotor and dist. cap.
it sounds like timming i would almost bet on it, i remember u said it wants to start and if the timming is out i will almost start but just wont do it, it is the timming
