Of course. Americans have been made to think cheaper is always better. If our auto makers succeed, their employees stay employed. When the Infrastructure Work Program runs out of roads, that's a job eventually lost.

The auto makers need to survive, but we need more manufacturing and higher quality. Make foreigners wait for a well made American product, when they get the item, it should scream "this is a quality widget!!!". (This increases demand)

Also, if foreign makers want to make cars here, they should be made to reward their employees EXACTLY LIKE OUR COMPANIES HAVE. Taking care of employees through good wages and benefits should be nothing to be ashamed of.

And the banks... don't have to show viability, are given billions repeatedly, and have parties. Um, and what is Exxon doing with all our money?? If they wouldn't have gotten too greedy, many mortgages wouldn't have failed.

So yes, pour billions on them and also fund possible new competitors with a car to compete with the Volt. This will encourage innovation which leads to more permanent, good paying jobs.

IMHO... Yes only because of the thousands of other jobs that are pending the bailout. According to UAW site the average worker in the union makes between $59 and $71 PER HOUR with benefits...

The retirement model was based off of dynamics from 30 years ago when a worker retired at 65 and died at 66... now they are retiring earlier and living longer...

The models need to be revamped, from wages to retirement and the UAW has to stand up for it's members and take one for the team, not just the workers and management.

GM and Ford should survive this (if they get the funding) but don't look for Chrysler to be so lucky, since it is a private company.

Its not just the big three. Here in Nebraska and Iowa we have some 12000 jobs assoc. with the big three. Seat frames, wiring, upholstery etc. are some of the things subbed out to the small manufacturers. So its not just the Big Three its also Joe and John Smith down the block.

Hi,
No, do not help them! At least not with our tax dollars. Make the overpaid CEO's give back their absurd salaries from last year and bail themselves out. After all these rich, overpaid ****'s are the ones who are responsible for running the company into the ground. And lets not even get into Lee Iaccoca. A man (if you want to call him that) who knew about the exploding Ford Pinto's produced on his watch, and decided it would be cheaper to pay off the lawsuits than to do a massive recall. He should be in jail, or better yet in indentured servitude to the survivors families instead of writing books for profit. On a constructive note, maybe we should allow the companies to be taken over by long time loyal employees, and see if they can do a little better. Except for Dodge that is, I mean what's the point of salvaging junk. Just Kidding. Be Well,
