Hi there, I am going through a weird obsession with all history having to do with the civil war...I cant seem to find books or videos that really fill in all the details from civilian life of the families, life as a civil war soldier, horrors of the wounded and hospitals, prisons, timelines from beginning to end, specifics on weapons, union, calvery, confederate and civilians. even food and/or starvation of our men. Can anyone recommend specific books and movies?? maybe some favorites?? Can be fictional if its based on facts. Any opinions on Shelby Foote...seems to be alot of interest in the book section on this author. Thanks in advance... all replies welcome, Rebecca
Shelby Foote AOK, fiction book - Cold Mountain. Non fiction - Time Life Book - The weapons, insignia's flags of the Confederacy. Check out the ebay search engine for scientific instruments. They have lots of Civil War era medical devices (they are gastly scarry) and pretty cheap for a collector of such things. Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War'. Good luck Traci ;o)
Hi Traci, thanks for the suggestion about scientific instruments & medical devices! Great suggestions! I will check into all of those. (love Cold Mountain book!) I will keep checking back for more input. Anyone else up til 4am reading about the civil war?? :) Rebecca
hello, the book that i find very informative is : " the illustrated directory of uniforms, weapons, and equipment of the civil war, edited by david miller" also i like the movies "gettysburg , gods and generals, andersonville, red badge of courage ,and dont forget gone with the wind ! " remember, heritage not hatred !
Thanks rebelnrogue for your suggestions. I just bought gettysburg the movie off ebay a few weeks ago, quite good. Gone with the wind, one of my favorites! I am going to look up Andersonville right now & the directory...book, I am a weapons freak so that sounds very interesting. Funny about the heritage thing, my grandparents and back are from Virginia and I am 38 and in CA just learning about it....hhhhaa! better late than never!!
