If you've never heard Rodney Crowell (I know, "who???"), give him a listen -- search for him on Amazon and listen to a few tracks. Awesome guitar work. (Clapton ain't too shabby, neither!)

YOU ARE SOOOO CLOSE. STEVIE WAS THE BEST BUT CLAPTON AND CARLOS ARE THE BEST NOW. CC DEVILLE CAN ALSO HOLD HIS OWN IN THE AGE OF HAIR BANDS

Depends on your taste. Yes, the ones you listed are up there. I would add Alex Lifeson of Rush, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Ann Wilson from Heart and Rossington from Lynyrd Skynyrd,

alot of the guitarist mentioned are ok and just ok but if you are talking about out right playing ability alot of the people mentioned are just not as good as people believe they are, to hear out right playing ability in my opinion you have to look at the Latin guitarist , flamingo artist , classical players that would blow your mind , certainly the above mention would most likely agree, alot of them pull from these arenas of guitarist, check out these venues cool playing to say the least

HOW ABOUT THE POOR LOWLY OVERLOOKED BASS PLAYERS. YOU WOULDN'T HAVE A BAND WITHOUT THE BASS. GEDDY LEE, CHRIS SQUIRE, JACO PASTORIUS, TAL WILKENFELD, VICTOR WOOTEN. DON'T FORGET THE BASS PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!

I can believe no one has mentioned Eddie Van Halen. There is not on axe man listed that he can not hold his own with. I do agree w/ Eric Clapton. People forget how he could rip it up when he was younger. I think with just the overall ability to do anything on a guitar, regardless of what type of music, these two guys have to be right at the top. I dont really think Jimi Hendrix is up there w/ the overall ability with guys like these but I think his pure creativity makes him one of the best.
