Just wondering , but does anyone know if in 2009 , when the Mint comes out with the 100th anniversary lincoln cent , will the pennies actually be made of copper. i realize it would be rather expensive to produce copper pennies for circulation, but maybe they might offer a copper commemorative set. i mean , it kind of makes sense to me. Any thoughts????
that would be great to see mr met. maybe they could mix up a batch of copper planchets with the reg circulated mint coins and we'd have another variety error!
nah,,, that could never happen.
it would be great to see them in the silver proof set. sort of like a what it was what it is suposed to be set.
On the news this morning they said that it cost more than a penny to make a penny and 7.5 cents to make a nickel. They are talking about going back to steel cents like back in 1943 and also doing the same thing with the nickel. But at this stage I think it's just talk.
hey mlnicrok. It's cost more for The Mint to produce a penny for quite some time now & I know there was talk a while back about phasing out the penny all together. I guess maybe there WILL be such a thing as wooden nickels someday. LOL
I will be surprised if they eliminate the penny anytime soon. To many people who aren't even collectors are against it. Compsoition may be changed to bring the cost down for coinage in general though.
If you guys have a copy of the 2009 Red Book take a look at page 121. It gives the lowdown on the 2009 Lincoln. The last paragraph states the Mint will strike a quantity of cents for collectors, "with the exact metallic content as the 1-cent coin contained in 1909. So I guess regular issue cents will be the same as what we have now unless they decide to change it to save $$.
thats awesome mlnicrok... the last paragraph says it all, "the mint will strike a quantity of cents for collectors with the exact metal content as the first 1 cent coin of 1909"
the guys at the mint will figure out a planchet design that is cost effective for them sooner or later. maybe silver?
I figure with the way the economy is lately , you may wanna keep that penny in the slab Cod. That way if you sell it for a good price , it may be enough to pay for a gumball!! :-D
