Anyone else tired of having to sift through all the stupid "copy" and "replica" listings when you're shopping for coins? IMHO, it has gotten way out of hand. Counterfeits, copies, replicas, miniatures, etc should be listed in their own, seperate listing!
That article is quite interesting, platinum101. In the article, the ebay rep says, ""We have a zero tolerance for counterfeits and we're doing our best to make sure that those things don't hit the marketplace". That right there is BS, as you can tell just by reviewing listings. There are plenty of coins listed as copies and replicas, let alone the fakes that are represented as the real thing. I'm surprised the gov't doesn't persue this. I guess they figure the people getting hurt aren't the average consumer. But ebay is letting it get out of hand.
Another thing is, with bad photos, it can be very difficult to try to tell when someone is misrepresenting a coin. In this day and age, there really isn't much of an excuse for not using good pictures to try to sell your items on ebay.
Yep, and pisses me off everytime I see a listing like it... I hate typing in something in completed listings, then going to price lowest first, and it shows replicas for days
Numismaticbureau not only cons you with a BS story and copy coins, they have 36 negative and 44 neutral feedbacks in one month. Also alot of the positive feedbacks should be negatives. Too bad ebay doesn't show this guy the door...
e-bay allows these coins to be sold as well as the Gov't ,as long as the coins are marked ,"copy". The problem with the chinese knockoffs is that the listing says "replica" right on the coin but the coins in fact do NOT have any such device on them. I bought a few copy morgans to fill the impossible holes and was quite impressed with the quality of the coins. These coins could easily fool the novice collector.
I have finally gotten a response from ebay regarding my complaints about listings for copy and replica coins filling up the various coin categories.
They said to report the offenders for miscategorizing their listings. There is a seperate category for replica coins.
So, whenever you see a copy, replica or reproduction listed amongst real coins, click "Report this item" at the bottom, then select "Listing policy violation" and "Other listing policy violations" and "Miscategorized items", and report them.
One of the worst offenders I've been seeing lately is "ixwisdom" but by far the only offender.
Well, now ebay has apparently changed their stance on this.
After telling me that I should be reporting sellers for "miscategorizing" their lisitngs, by listing copy and replica coins with other coins instead of in the "replica" categories, I noticed nothing was happening with all the complaints I was filing. I'm guessing I was generating too much work for them. Anyway, I contacted them again about why nothing was happening. They told me that there was nothing wrong with listing copies and replicas amongst other coins!
My question to them is, why as a numismatic enthusiast, would I want to have to sift through dozens and dozens of listings for copies and replicas to find a small number of coins with actual numismatic value?
If (and a big "if" here) I really wanted a copy or replica (which I don't), I would search for them. But when I am searching for say, "1794 silver dollar", I don't want to have to sift through all the junk postings.
There's got to be a way to make ebay take notice to this problem and enforce the listing categories. A lot more complaints from all of us would be a good start.
