Why do people drill holes in coins ?? Does it make them worthless ?? Have you ever bought a coin with a hole drilled in it ?? Seems like a waste of money, but like they say "a fool and his money....."
Hey chief,,,,,I have seen some absolutely beautiful and precious coins just ruined by being holed or made into jewely. I believe this reduces the coin to just mineral value instead of actual coin value...What a waste.
yeah, like all those pillar dollars and trade dollars with chop marks on them. i have seen photos where the chinese have chopped to much you cannot see the face of the coin any longer. lol. they also lose silver weight every time too.
I have few coins with the holes in them, its ashame the coins are ruined but i'm only out to fill holes in my sets.some of the half dimes etc are hard to find so when one comes along i pick it up. Later if I find a beter one i exchange the holed one... people would drill holes in coins for lots of reasons, butons, love tokens, civel war fighters would initial them and sometimes drill holes in them to wear them....it is what it is
never did buy one , probably never will!!! However , I thought you guys were talking about these kind of Holy coins(check the listing below). I'd love to own these , just a wee bit out of my budget right now!!!
Mr-met; now those are holy coins. But to answere the chief, I once bought a bunch of silver coins and there was a silver 3cent pc. in there, that I would grade about scrap 8? well worn and holed oh well , I put it on Ebay as scrap silver and sold it for I beleive it was $8.00 or so, you just never know.
Yes the hole does make the coin only worth the value of scrap. Look on the bright side the more coins that are made worthless as coins like this the more valuable the ones we all collect will become.
Looking over some old posts and found this one. I have some nieces who care nothing about coins, however they love coin jewelry. I have bought some coins that are already defaced by a hole drilled in them, take them to the jeweler and they make braclets and necklaces of them. I would never deface a coin by drilling a hole in them but if they are already defaced (and cheap, I might add), I just return them to the state that somebody defaced them for years ago, and I make some pretty special girls happy. Just guessing, but thats the reason people drill holes in coins- to make special girls happy. I do not believe anything that can makes young girls smile is worthless and perhaps I will make collectors of them yet.
I just remembered that I bought a dos pesos Mexican gold coin in a gold bazel six years ago from my coin dealer at a little over the price of the bullion value. I had to buy the gold necklace separate, though that was considerably over the price of the bullion value. It was for my oldest niece when she graduated high school. Today, it is worth more than it cost me. Though technically not a holed coin, the premise is the same. If bullion goes up, so does the value of a holed coin. Though I feel like I am speaking blasphemy when I am advocating that there is some merits to holy coins, i.e., they do make cool gifts, and they have a history value far beyond my years, because most are in the 1840-1900 range. I like to think that they will keep them and give them to their children someday and will tell them that they were from their super cool great uncle. I am working on a braclet now for my sixteen year old niece for Christmas that will be comprised of SL dimes and at least one Barber dime and all have at least F16 details, one SL dime will have EF40 details.
I bought an 1853 O half $ on ebay in fine+ shape that came with an 1858 O half with a hole. I paid $21 for the pair and was tickled pink. I put a 5 piece type set together for a 6 year old for his birthday and included the holed half. He thought it was great. He thought the half was really cool. He doesn't collect coins,he collects "change". Kids are great! The '53 O is a one year type which kicks a$$. I put a pic up at coinhood.
