From one MM to another , I know you like busty halves & this one actually caught my eye. I don't know how you feel about toned coins , but as I said I really like this one & am considering placing a bid. What do you think & what do you believe would be a fair price? Thanks , MM (mr_met1221)
Sorry if I left any other bust half collector's out. But I wouldn't mind hearing what everybody thinks about this. (especially those who are familiar with bust halves) I just reached out to Musicman 1st because I know he digs 'em that's all !!! (no offense)
That is a beautiful bust half !! The seller says it is an Overton 106 which is a Rarity 3. A Rarity 3 is considered scarce but not overly so. In the Bust half Rarity Scale there are 8 levels. R1 is common, R8 is the highest level of rarity. Wholesale for a normal 1831 Bust Au 55 is between $ 380 - $ 450. This bust will command a higher price because of the color. The eagle’s wings on the left of the coin are a little flat but that is strike related. The observe is typical of an AU 55. I love the coin but the price is a bit high right now at $ 578 . PCGS retail is $ 850. Most of the normal AU 55 Busts go for around $ 450 - $ 500 on Heritage. I picked up a slightly toned 1830 Au 55 on E Bay a few months back for $ 450. It was not as nice as this 1831. Here is the E Bay Item # for that Bust : 160240100461
Do not let me discourage you from bidding on this – it really is a beautiful coin and will carry a premium because of the toning. If you bid try not to pay more then $ 650. Remember you are paying for the color of this coin not the grade. I promise I will not bid on this coin , it is your find !!
Thanks!! I'm not necessarily concerned all that much that the seller doesn't accept paypal. His feedback looks good plus he does have a return policy ( never really understood that re-stocking fee crap , i mean it's a coin , do you have to hire other people to re-stock it???) I do love toned coins & have a few bustys which I've wanted to start collecting again. I'm going to keep an eye on this & wait a little bit before I place a bid. I was thinking $650 - $680 as my highest bid only because I really like the colors on this. Overall it's not a bad strike either. Thanks for the advice . I appreciate it. Wish me luck!!
There are 3 levels to a grade. Low, Medium, High . That coin because of the color should get a high rating. So if CAC saw it I would bet you would get a sticker placed on that slab. Toned Busts are also my favorite. The best toned ones carry a high premium .
Seeing that we are sharing potential buys here are some that I am after on Heritage :
UH OH looks like music and I have been looking at some of the same busty ladies today. Sorry I will back off on HA....Been kinda bored with our little hurricane and all so I had to spend a few bucks right.
Mustang were you bidding on any of those busts ?? Which ones were you looking at ? Don’t let me stop you from bidding. If you want you can PM me and we can tell each other what our max bids will be.
Those are some pricey coins there Mustang. I always bid on to many coins and then eventually get our bid on most. I have a couple of bids out for the Bowers Auction tomorrow, MS 63 Indian Quarter Eagle and MS 62 Indian Half Eagle. Then I have many bids out for Heritage on Bust Half’s and some Large Cents. As I always do I will watch Heritage for those no reserve auctions to see if I can pick up a deal.
Check out this Large Cent – I was high bidder for maybe 30 minutes – LOL And that is only because there was only one bid !! I knew there was no way I would ever get this coin cheap.
Well Musicman , stick a fork in me!! I'm done before I ever got started. It's over $1000 with a few hours left. I really like it , but not quite that much!!
