I don't know much about wheat pennies, but I just found something which looks odd to my untrained eye. It is a 1952D but the D appears to be rotated about 30 degrees and there is something underneath. Only part of whatever is underneath is shows, in the lower left, and it could be another D. Hard to describe it any better.

There is nothing in the red book about a variation like this and I doubt very much that I have found something new, so what's the deal? Is this sort of thing common and not of much interest?

Have you tried coppercoins.com? They have a extensive list of varietys and errors. Tons of things that are not in the Red Book. That and CONECA.org. I think it's CONECA. If you don't find it there, you could offer to submit and see what they say. (CONECA) I think there are plenty of doubled and rotated date marks, and may not command a big premium, if any, but you have to find out. : )
