I just bought (another) 1987 ASE. For the 2nd time, there are marks on it. This one is slabbed by NGC, but I think there may be glue around the edges in some parts. There is a red material, maybe velvet on the actual coin and I can see it without magnification. I feel like I just got screwed (again). I would appreciate any opinions, comments, and knowledge.
car, I collect both NGC & PCGS (mainly NGC ) They're usually pretty accurate & consistent with their grades. I don't know what the red stuff could be , but I would think that NGC would have removed the foreign material before slabbing it. Is there glue around the edges of the slab or around the coin itself?? I don't want to be an onion in the ointment , but if the slab appears to be tampered with , then there's a good chance that it probably was. I was reading a post on the Collector's Society website about a gentleman who purchased an NGC slabbed MS64 Peace dollar on E-bay , ( a 1924S I believe) He paid a pretty penny for it too & it turned out that someone carefully/surgically opened the case & replaced it with a lower graded coin. I hope this is not the case.
Mr. Met: Thanks for the reply. There is glue (or what looks to be glue) around the edges of the slab, not the coin itself. And yeah, that;'s what I thought. I shouldn't be able to see a darn thing on the coin.
Well Car, that does sound pretty strange. I'm assuming the red/maroon material would be from the velvet case that it originally came in from the mint. With a mass submission this might slip through NGC's quality control. But if there is glue, then you have a definate problem. Is there a chance it could be melted plastic?
Trvl: No chance of being melted plastic. It is too carefully done and it is strategically placed along the sides of the holder. : ( Thanks for replying, Stever, isn't it? : )
I would probably have to pay them to look at it, and since the holder has been tampered with, they can't be held accountable, at least, that's what I would think. Or am I wrong? Anyone ever tried?
email seller and tell him the problem and tell him you want a refund. If he says no tell him you have no choice but to leave negative feedback. If he has a 100% positive feedback I bet he takes it back. Worth a try.
nothing worse than getting a bad coin...sorry Car... are the marks on the coin or the slab itself? if there on the coin then the slab has definately been tampered with.
If you paid with paypal, you can tell the buyer you want a refund. file a dispute with paypal first before you mail the coin back. after you recieve a refund, send the coin back or if you have to send the coin back first, send it registered mail with a return signature required.
if you paid by check then bad feedback may be your only alternative. keep em honest.
Car, you are wise beyond your feedback numbers. By looking the coin over carefully before leaving feedback, and by buying from a very reputable seller, it shouldn't be too hard to get your money back. Just tell them the problem and everything should turn out peachy (hopefully). -Ryan
P.S. Steve is closer to my last name- I won't further elaborate since KG is probably looking for me! LOL
Geez, you guys have me worried now. I have several NGC holders with what I felt was excessive glue on the edges. The coins looked ok though. I just bought a NGC ASE MS69 Eagle that had a serious gouge at 9:00 in the letters on the rev. I didn't notice it when I gave it a cursory look when it arrived. I found it when deciding which of 2 coins I was going to put into my MS69 ASE collection. I use a 4X Opti Visor to look at my coins NGC uses 5X magnification to grade coins. I emailed them and that's what they told me. Many of my MS69 Eagles have minute nicks and scratches visible under magnification but not the naked eye. Others I have I can't spot anything on them and assume they must have an edge flaw you can't see in the slab. I also have some PCGS ASE and other coins that don't look that fantastic compared to my NGC's. Makes me wonder why they go for so much more. The most recent example of this is the 2008 ASE with the Rev. of the 2007. The MS 70's are going for well over a $1000.
