My repair person said my hard drive is what is crashing my computer and he cannot retrieve any of the info . tried as slave and no go. ANY other suggestions before I say goodbye to "my life" on my old hard drive.
If you had your computer backed up properly, get a new HD and reinstall your OS. Then retrieve your files from the backup. If you don't have a backup: A proper tech should have a SATA/IDE USB adapter to try to recover your data to a working computer. A busted hard drive usually won't allow the operating system to run long enough to get your data off without crashing. However, depending on how bad the HD failure, you can recover some or all of your files to a secondary machine. Most of the time I have been able to recover most personal/business off bad hard drives. Best of luck.
Only extreme trouble will leave you unable to access a drive from your boot floppy. if the drive shows under your bios, you can assume the master record is probably ok just disordered - did the tech mention error messages that occurred? Weird trick that has worked for me in the past - put the HD in the freezer and then after it has chilled down mount it up. This is a dirty fix for ailing hardware - not ailing file directories or entries. it is important to be sure what you are dealing with before taking extreme measures as there often is no going back
1- if you have no backup and need the drive contents, narrow it down to what you have CD/DVD/floppies for and what you need to retrieve 2- if you are just trying to save the device, you can wipe it and re-format it but you must be aware that a sick drive rarely can be viable longterm and replacement is best. 3- recovery services charge to save your bacon but if is essential to retrieve the data(such as tax records etc) the cost may be worth the outlay. 4- ordinary fix techs seldom deal in file recovery beyond the basic sorts of things so understand the level of expertise you need for this problem and act appropriately. 5- You may have to face the hard fact that your stuff is gone so the last is a lesson for the future about keeping copies of your stuff
If the drive is boot-able at all- there are programs that will retrieve the info. Go to goggle and run a search for drive retrieval. I saved all my photos and most of my documents this way. I did spend about 60.00 for 2 different programs to do this. I did get great results for images and the drive had been reformatted. I needed to buy old partition recovery software. It did work for me. Guys just be aware that if your wife does this-all your old nu die pictures will be undeleted. Good luck! pgrichards
Just about any bootable, removeable media can bring up your computer without having to read your hard drive. As others have said, if your computer's BIOS still recognizes your hard drive (you can determine this at boot time before the operating system kicks in...) then the removeable boot media can get your computer running with an operating system in memory, not dependent on the hard drive. For example: any Linux live CD, Partition Magic or Norton System Utilities, even an old MS Dos/PC Dos boot disk, any of these can get you up to a command line that will let you access the files on the hard drive.
Have you try a DOS base software called "HD generator". It can re-generator your hard disk, I have tried before, it save my hard disk (a bad sector hard disk).
Some harddrives go down due to heat, you could try to put it in the fridge for a few hours (inside a plastic bag), then connect it and boot the computer. you might have enough time to copy all your data.
Imary. I wouldn't throw the drive away. Keep it. Just because you didn't find a solution today does not mean you won't find one tomorrow. Consider this. Your computer might not recognize the drive because the jumper on the drive is wrong. I would have you send me this to work on it, but I know you wouldn't want your information out there. I have done computers for 6 years, and went to college to certify, but I don't like college!
