Don't laugh. I know this is possible, but I don't know how. This just sounds like an intreging possibility for me. I have 4 dogs and 4 cats and I was thinking that it would make lovely yarn.
I don't have any crochet items for sale right now, but I would love to get back into making a selling the 6/8 strand crochet rugs. They look quite a bit like the old fashioned braided rugs and tend to sell very well. Maybe this neighborhood will inspire me to do that.
Hello and welcome to the group.. Yes you can make yarn out of animal hair...I have never done it but I'll bet you can find instructions on the internet or at your local library ..I have 3 cats and I probably could weave enough to make a very large blanket..I think you can even get hair from your local groomers...anyway please let the rest of know if you ever try it... I have made throw rugs and am still using two I made quite awhile back..It's great how you can make them with exactly the colors you need and alot cheaper...I have noticed how people really like the homemade rugs.. Good Luck and again Welcome...Joyce
From what I understand, you would treat it much as you would wool. You would wash it, card it (combing the fibers straight), then spin it into yarn. I have not tried this yet, but I am thinking about trying it with my puppy's fur. It is such a pretty gold color, I thought it would be fun. I looked it up online and there are some sites that show how to spin with a drop spindle. I haven't had a chance to try yet.
Hello there. I'm just joining this group, too. Yes, you can spin your pet hair into yarn and crochet something from that. You might need to add a bit of wool or other fiber to it when "carding" it (combing it out), so it will be long enough to spin and stay together. I raise Alpacas, and spin, so I have run across people who have done it. I have 2 cats, but don't have enough fluff to try it. If you can locate a spinning group in your area, you could bring some of the fur to them and see if someone would want to do it. It should be clean, and at least 3 inches long. And a large gallon zip bag stuffed would be good to start with. If you just want your pets fur only, make sure they won't add wool to it. Wool will felt when washing, but the fur won't. But you can hand wash. It takes quite a bit to make enough yarn to do something with it, but you might be able to make a winter hat, or a doggy coat! I hope you can find someone to do it near you. As far as a drop spindle goes, they are frustrating, so if you want to do that, learn first with some wool before you use your precious fur! Be encouraged!
I frequent a local yard shop on a regular basis and was talking to one of the class instructors about wanting to spin the hair that I brush off my animals (2 dogs, 2 cats) and was told the process was the same, carding etc... but I was also told that if the fibers get wet it would have the odor of the animal (like wet dog smell) that comment has made me second guess wanting to spin my own animals fur.....I'm still thinkin on it though.
