First Experience With Ebay A Little Frustrating

I have been crocheting since 2002. I started with afghans for family members and soon developed a love for making baby items such as booties, layettes and afghans. I also make doilies, stuffed animals, pillows, etc. Everyone said, "You should sell your stuff on Ebay!" So... here I am. My first go round (2 weeks ago) did not get a single bid. I'm on my 2nd go round now with quality items. I don't think my asking price is too much considering the cost of yarn, ribbons, buttons and whatnot. So... why am I not getting bids? Is it the wrong time of year? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

You have some beautiful items. You also have a (0) feedback. That could be a little as to why you are not getting any bids. Also, your auctions do not say enough. What size are the afghans? That is really important.

Think of things you would ask other sellers about your auctions. I have one baby afghan going, it was a quick hurry up auction, but take a look and see what I have put. The more description you put the better.

Your shipping is great. That's a really good price on shipping.

Your title is key. Only use key words that people will search for. "New" really isn't a key word. Instead of saying blocks use the words "granny squares" Title could have read: "Crochet Pastel Granny Squares Baby Afghan" and if there is room put blanket after afghan.

Hang in there. It took me a while to get going also. It seems like the world of crochet goes in spurts. I found my best time to sell afghans was in October thru Feb.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail me.

This is a repeated subject on many of the forums right now. The economy is slowing everything down, I believe. But hag-a-needle is correct, don't give up and she's added some good advice.

I'll put my 2 cents in. My son is an amatuer photographer. He told me to take all my photos in natural daylight for the best color quality. And preferably outdoors on a cloudy day so the sun does not wash out the colors. I also think your baby clothes would stand out better on a more neutral background instead of wood grain, perhaps white since you are using pastels. The wood grain shouts rustic and hard and it seems so contradictary to your soft, cozy pastel baby items. I use black a lot in my backgrounds to really "pop" the colors, but with pastels I think white would be more complimentary. You could buy some white soft fabric or felt or use white bath towels. I bought black foam board from Michaels to use myself.

Also take a really good look at advertisements in magazines and craft books. Although it's important to note size of item and pattern that's clear, look at how crochet books feature an afghan. It's always draped over a chair, in the case of a baby afghan sometimes a crib. It's called "staging" and it never hurts to take some lessons from the pros. If you put other items in your photos to stage (like a rattle or something) just make sure you disclose it's "not included" in the sale or you'll be caught by someone wanting a "freebie" item!

Your crochet work is absolutely gorgeous, keeping playing with your presentation. And good luck to you!

pastels show up best against a dark contrastng background. natural light rules

buy buy buy....you need to build your feedback score

if you're serious about makign and selling crochet stuff on ebay, may i suggest you set a reasonable budget to purchase yarns, other supplies and patterns on ebay to build that FB score. yes...a good prompt buyer will translate into a good prompt honest seller.

best of luck...I'm workign onthe same things with this new computer and new ID...I killed my old ID when that last computer died...too bad too

Hello, Bizzyfingas.
Well look at you go..It just took a little time and I went to check out your items and your sold out..Terrific! I agree your work is very nice and reeks of Quality.
I also sell some of my hand crocheted items..just sold one of my Afghans a few days ago..Once a few people purchase from you, others will follow..One thing I do now is if something I have listed doesn't sell then when I re-list I add the fees onto that listing..You will do fine if your not trying to get rich and have patience..I wish you LUCK of the crochet spirit..( There is one you know )..God bless you and yours....

Hi, There might be a number of reasons your items are not selling and you are getting discouraged

the first thing I saw was that you are wasting money by putting these in two categories. Your fees will add up fast.

Also your titles could be better worded and you need to use all 55 characters if you can.

email me at piperL4J@aol.com and I will help you with your titles etc.

Your crochet items are just gorgeous

Your low feedback is also a problem. Once you start selling and get better titles.. you will get customers.

Also in the auction.

Make a template in word or something that says the following

Afghan size:
Name of yarn used:
Weight of Yarn:
Colors of afghan:
Stitches used:
washing instructions:

Good Luck

I just listed my 1st item, a crocheted baby bunting, on ebay. I read your comment and the ones below and see you must have sold all your stuff. How long did it take for your stuff to start selling? I have been giving stuff away for years and everyone thinks I should sell it, so now I have taken the 1st step and am just anxiously waiting.

Thank you all for your advice. I plan to get back into selling when school starts back. Genij - your baby bunting is very pretty. I have been learning by watching other items that are similar to what I have to offer. I think that we all will do much better once the weather cools again. Again, thank you all for your encouragement and advice!

I've pretty much given up trying to sell on eBay. I have switched over to 3tsy for a number of reasons. 1. it's for handcrafted items (except for supplies and vintage items) only, 2. it's $.20 to list an item for 4 (?) months, and 3. you can sell the item for it's value not a low starting price and hope it get's bids.

If anyone wants an evite, simply ASQ me with your email addy.
