I am moving to an apartment and will no longer be able to keep my dogs that I've had for five years. Any ideas on how to find them a great new home?
Useful Funny
When I moved I could not in good conscience bring my cat with me. I just knew if I did she would have been killed on the road. She was used to living on a quiet street with almost no traffic. We moved to a high traffic street. so,...
I placed an ad in the local paper and found a great home for her in just 3 days! Now she has another loving home and I am grateful that I don't have to worry over her getting killed.

place an ad in the local paper - but don't say free to good home. (You never really know what kind of home they are going to) instead ask $50.00 a piece for them...this way you know if someone is going to spend money for a dog they are going to at least take care of what they paid for. Set up an interview. Don't be upset if someone wants one and not the other placing more than one dog is VERY difficult at best. Your dogs will adjust - if this fails and they are pure bred they have pure bred rescues out there for every kind of dog imaginable. (If they are not pure breds don't be discouraged - contact a rescue for the type of dog you have they will probably take them in.) If all else fails there is always the local shelter - just research shelters in your area for the best fit for your dogs.
I am very sorry to hear that you can't take your dogs with you!! Best of luck

Is there any way you can find an apartment that will allow pets. It's heartbreaking that your can't take your pets of 5 years. I would keep looking for a place that would allow dogs. Just MHO.

There are a lot of good pet rescue organizations out there, do a google search with your city and humane society and you may be able to find one close by, some will even pick up your dog.
You can also call your local humane society or pound if your city or county government has one and ask for a referral. Most pounds would rather give you a phone number than to have to take in your dog. A lot of vets have phone numbers or know of organizations that are safe to place them with. They may even know of someone that has recently lost their pet that is looking for a new friend. Many rescue organizations will place your pet in a foster home until they screen prospective owners.I had to leave a dog behind once when moving and was very fortunate to find her a good home networking through work. It breaks your heart. Good luck! Let us know if you find a good home.

Try posting an ad in your Vet's office.Or place a free ad in Petfinder.com(i think you can place a free ad).But most of all,be very careful on who you give your dogs too.I hope you find them a loving home.

Please try petfinder.com, and Interview the adoptive parents, as well. I really do hope you can find a great loving home for your dogs. Is it really okay for you? That's the question? You treated them like a child, they will also miss you for sure. Take care and best regards, Abby

Believe it or not, my dog was posted on a wall in a local restaurant. We met in a mall parking lot and fell in love. Good luck!

I like the rescue groups idea...our local shelter keeps a list of the groups on hand and places them there when they are not adopted out Try to Google the name of the breed with the word rescure and your location. Vet office is good, too. Another idea - is there a family member or friend who could take them? That way you might still be able to visit - kind of an open adoption. My #2 came from a friend who could no longer keep him- she was happy that he went to someone she knew and trusted he'd be cared for. Many of the rescue groups are very though about how they place their furbabies this days. Home visits, questionnaires...it's like adopting a child!

I HAVE TO SAY, IF U HAVE TO GIVE UP PETS, A RESCUE IS A GOOD WAY TO GO, BETTER THAN ANY OTHER WAY EXCEPT TO LOOK FOR A PLACE MORE SUITABLE FOR U PET,,,I KNOW THATS NOT ALWAYS EASY

www.craigslist.com
i have rehomed numerous stray, rescued cats here, make sure to ask for a small rehoming fee so that way you know the people truely want your pet as there own.

I completely agree with the rescue orginization idea. I have worked with a greyhound rescue agency in the past and know that rescue agencies can usually spend more time and effort in rehoming your pets. So sorry about your predicament :(

Be careful about placing ads. You can try various rescue groups listed on petfinders.com.
