Our best friend, Chip, is having surgery tomorrow for removal of a cancerous growth (MAST Cell) on his hind left leg quarters. He has MANY soft, moveable, fatty tumors (lipomas) which occur with aging Labs but this one I knew was different. It was round, hard and dimpled looking. Cytology said it was MAST cell. Our wonderful Vet is having knee surgery on himself at the beggining of December so got Chip right in tomorrow to have this growth removed. It will be sent for grading. I hope it comes back at a Grade 1 so Chip doesn't have to have any further treatment. Before his surgery, I will give him a Benedryl and just 1/2 his normal dose of insulin. We shall bring him home at the end of the day. We shall be glad when tomorrow is past. ...Sandy, Cory & Chip
Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. I will let you know how he makes out tomorrow. He's such a good dog. When the Vet was doing the apirate, he just stood there like a trooper -- never moved or flinched. I know he will do okay.
To All the Kind Folks who have commented about Chip.THANK YOU!! It has been a long day today but it has ended well. Chip came through his surgery just fine. He has a very long incision on his hind quarter but the Vet wanted to make sure he got all of the tumor and margins around. He is sending it for grading and we then will find out what the next step is. We are all hoping for a Grade 1 so that there will be nothing else needed to do. He also removed a small benign growth on his eyelid which had grown in size. We take Chip to an Eye Vet (A wonderful woman in Buffalo, NY) because he had both his cataracts done when he was four years old. She said that since it was small and not rubbing on his eye, it was okay just to leave it. Since he had to have anesthesia today and the fact that the growth had enlarged, our family Vet removed it. The only sad part that comes with that is that Chip has to wear the E-collar. It is so difficult for him to adjust to it as well as we feel so bad for him. I know it is important so he doesn't rub the sutured area on his eye but neither of us like it. He has to have the sutures in for 14 days because he takes Dexacidin eye drops which slow the healing process. So -- in 14 days, he will be a happy dog again. Until then, we shall baby him and pamper him and make his life as easy as we can. Our dogs are so dear to us, aren't they? Thank you again for your kind thoughts, words and interest. Sandy, Cory & Chip
So glad to hear that Chip came thru his surgery ok. We will keep him in our prayers hoping that the lab results come back negative. It's so stressful to wait for those results to come back and it seems like they take forever. My little Shih Tzu, Olivia, had a tumor removed from her shoulder about a year ago and I was so stressed out waiting for the lab results to come back, however when they did come back it was all good news. Give that big guy a hug from Olivia, Mitzi, Tito & Edie
It is so heart-warming to hear from all of you with your good thoughts and words. I told Chip he has many people who care about him. Thank You so very much. Today is better already. I trimmed back that E-collar so he isn't stepping on it when he sniffs the ground and banging into everything as he walks. It still isn't wonderful to wear and he doesn't understand what it is all about but we will get through it and he will be better because of it. As my mother always told me "This, too, will pass." His blood sugar was horrible this morning: 427!!! That is due to the lowered dose of insulin he received yesterday for surgery and the stress of the operation. By this evening, I hope we are back to where it should be. He will be drinking a lot of water today, for sure. Thank you, again, for being there with us during this time. Sandy, Cory & Chip
