This is a sad story, but I think it really says something about the love dogs have for us. Several years ago, I was at the vet's office and saw a flyer, on the wall of the waiting room, saying they had a cocker that needed a home. Her former parents moved out of thier home and left her in the backyard with no food for about 2 weeks. I couldn't resist! I took her home that day. She was the sweetest little girl! I named her Brandi. You know how some dogs like to give kisses and others just don't? Well, although Brandi loved to cuddle, she was not a kisser. After I had her for about 2 years, she developed cancer. In those 2 years, I think she may have given me 9 or 10 kisses. Eventually, her health got so bad, I knew it was time to say goodbye. The vet asked me if I wanted to be in the room with her. I was crying so hard, all I could do was nod. I layed her on the table, and got down on my knees so that we are at the same level and the doctor explained he process to me. I didn't want her head to fall on the table as she went to sleep, so I placed her head on my shoulder, told her what a good girl she was and how much I love her. The doctor said everything was ready and he was going to give her the shot. Just as he was injecting the medicine, she lifted her head off my shoulder, looked directly into my eyes and gave me a kiss on the nose. She then put her head back on my shoulder, her eyes closed and she was gone. I just know she was saying "Thank you dad, I love you and goodbye." This was about 8 years ago, I am still get choked up when i think about it. (including now) Dogs are soooo amazing and I can't imagine my life without them. Daddy misses and loves you Brandi.

What a beautiful story, sad as it may be... Brandi was definitely saying good-bye and thank you in the only way she could... I will never forget the look in my Princess' eyes (Beagle) many years ago when I had her put to sleep... it was love and good-bye all at once.

Drop in at The Daily Bark... lots of nice folks out there that love sharing their "doggie tales",

Yes - it is sad. Dogs do love us unconditionally - always. I love and miss every dog I ever had.

It is so very hard to say good bye to someone we love so much, but they will be all waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge and we will be together forever. But for the time we still have hear on earth, they are really still with us, and are never gone. And no matter how long ago they left us, it still hurts because we still miss them so much. Edie

So sad.....Tears are streaming down my face..... no wonder I can't visit some of these stories. Had been down that road to loose precious fur babies too many times but still get others to heal the wound. They are all special and will always be special in our hearts and memories as long as we live. Hang in there and know that there is another precious fur babie that needs your love and attention to help you through your pain.

Well, I am now crying again over the loss of mine and your cockers. I just had to say good bye to mine on the 10th. Winston didn't give kisses either, he was very stingy even though he was a puppy. I wish that I would have had the strength to stay in the room with the vet when she put him down but I couldn't bring myslef to see him close his eyes for the last time. I don't think the pain will ever go away. I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing that beautiful story with us. Brandi was lucky to have a daddy like you.

OK, now I'm crying. It is a special bond that real dog lovers and their owners have. I did not have the opportunity to take my Nipper to the vet, His little heart just gave out, right there in my arms. It was good that you were there for that "last kiss"

Thank you everybody for your kind words. I knew that other people would be able to relate to my story. Mandjx5, I know that it seems like the pain will never end. Just know that it is not true. You will alway love and miss your baby, but time will heal that wound. Winston will always be with you and you were both VERY lucky to have each other, even if it was for a short time. :)

Hi. You did it right! You were with her and shared love to the end. I recently saw a man send his little dog through the door at the vets and it soon came back in a box. Everyone needs to be with their loved ones at the end, maybe with your dog on a favorite pad or pillow and you suggesting a walk or other positive thought at the right time could be best. bob

Now I'm crying. All of my 6 maltese came running over to me licking the tears off my face. This is when I wish I had 10 arms and I could hold them all at one time. You did the right thing. I so very much feel for you. I could never imagine. You know are animals are our kids. They love us unconditional as we love them unconditional.

WOW. My heart goes out to you drivetolive. Losing one of your babies is always so hard, but to lose one so unexpectedly. I'm sure our babies are playing together now. Thanks again for all of your responses to my story.

Such a sad time in an Owners life to say goodbye to one of your "babies."

You did the right thing. A vet told me once that even though it is a hard thing to do (put your animal down), you should be there when it happens. The last thing your pet should see before passing is his/her Owner's face.
