Why do so many people have the impression that pit bulls are intimidating and scary. They can be some of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. I know there are some haters out there that will respond negatively to this, but you are wrong. Any other pit bull owners agree, that their's wouldn't hurt a fly?

Hi jeff.dean
My pup wouldn't hurt a fly, can't catch them-haha
Seriously though,I was told just last week that my neice doesn't visit my home because of my dog. At first I was angry and then sad. If you saw the utter delight on my girl's face when we have visitors. She nearly turns inside out with happiness. She just adores children.
I'll admit my girl doesn't like other dogs so I don't let her near any and there's no problem.
The breed gets a bad name only because of BAD owners.

I'm not talking about bad owners, just when people react negatively towards good owners just because of the breed of dog he or she owns. Like, "Oh my god, why is your pit-bull off her leash? I can't believe it!!! Ahhhhh.... Killer on the loose."
When obviously the dog wouldn't be off her leash if she was a threat to ANYTHING. And they usually end up scaring the dog more than anything else. It's just stupid of people.

I'm not sure what to do to join, so I'll tell you about our 1yr ol fawn brindle rescue pit. She is the most lovabable, snuggley, soft, green eyed baby. We did not crop her body parts AAAGH!!! Wonder how others would like to have theirs cut off. Her name is NALA and she is the poster dog for our rescue group. We did our research and
realize that some things are just in the genes-like love ,loyalty, great with kidskisses and dreamy eyes-what more could any one ask for!

Hi jeff.dean, I think it just comes down to ignorance and lack of experience.
Humans have a habit of fearing what they don't know. Only education can improve things.

My pits love to catch an eat flies, but that's the extent of their violence- they think they are lap dogs. I actually had my dog, Blues, ears cropped because his father was prone to frequent ear infection and he's the spittin image. It was done by a vet, when he was 9 weeks old. No anesthesia and he didn't even flinch. he actually fell asleep during the stitching. That's the father and him in the pic.

Welcome Jeff & jmp632! My hubby and I have had 3 purebred Pits (Staffordshire Terriers) and one 3/4 Pit-1/4 Dobie over the years... they were all the best family dogs a person could ask for, but... yes, the general public is generally terrified of them because of the dog-fighting/gangsta' element of people who breed them for their aggressive attitude instead of the loving dogs they can be. Buster was our first Pit and he was a smaller copy of Hooch (Turner & Hooch movie)... but we have some brass doorknobs that are truly classic crunched items because he was terrified of sonic booms! When a boom would happen, he would hang off the nearest doorknob! Sure got some strange looks from visitors when they asked where we got the unusual doorknobs... one lady backed up about 6' when she noticed the one on the front door... and we almost didn't get her in the door after that :-)

Hey, you two... come on over to the Daily Bark and tell us all about your 4-legged kids. We love to share the joys and sorrows of owning one of God's greatest creatures.

Wags,
J'an

Most dog responses are the result of training or lack of by their owners. I have some friends who have Pit Bulls and their very good dogs.

Aww, Staffordshires are great. (J'an)
And trish, that's not what I'm talking about. Most Pits are very good dogs! Duh... I'm talking about good owners with their good dogs, getting weird reactions from people for no reason.

Hi everyone... I know so many people who have Pit Bulls and the are the nicest sweetest dogs. A dog doesn't bite because it is pit bull. A dog might bite because It is neglected or abused, maybe lack of social interaction, or that might be what they are brought up to do. Which all circles right back to the owners responsibility.
I also know that when Pit Bulls, or any other large dog, do bite, they are very dangerous especially to small children. So I believe that if you own a dog or any animal, you take on responsibilities of that animal. Every dog has different temperament. Pit Bulls get a bad name from the people who get one, neglect it, or ignore it, and let it roam around free. It bite someone or something because nobody taught it different and then it gets taken to you know where, and The Same people get another one, and the cycle repeats itself again and again; over and over. SOME PEOPLE AREN'T MEANT TO BE DOG OWNERS! THEY GIVE DOGS A BAD REPUTATION!

Our girl (p.bull w/ a touch of lab) has always loved children ours/ anyones.
Only large adult men get her back up until she knows them.
7 months old when we "rescued" her - her former owner hit her for being a puppy - chewing things etc. and she had a problem realizing my husband (and other looming adult males) really was her friend (now she snuggles up on the couch with him first).
On a leash on a walk she is fine with other dogs unless they are aggressive. She is protective but loves to play. A highly active puppy but worth the trouble now 12 yrs later (our 4th dog and she was alawys good with our older dogs - dobie, shep. etc.
