Hello All,

My little Zoey, a nine year old Australian Terrier has CCL surgery on her right back leg about two weeks ago. I'm supposed to keep her in "couch potato" mode, but what can I say... she's a terrier! We've be carrying her up and down the steps but occasionally she sneaks up or down on her own, which is freaking me out. She is starting to put some weight on the leg now, but she still mostly holds it up.

Does anyone know how long it takes for this type of surgery to heal? The incision looks fine and the stitches are out. If I can figure out how to post a picture, I will post one of Zoey. She is beautiful! (Of course, ALL dogs are beautiful, right? Especially our own doggies!)

I'm glad I found this neighborhood about dogs. I love talking about them, reading about them, being with them, I love everything about dogs!

All the best!
Betsy

P.S. My ebay store is Vintage Art Magnets where I have lots of beautiful dog magnets, all images from vintage postcards. Stop by and let me know what you think!

Our 11 yr old Border Collie had the same surgery. He kept the leg up for about 4 or 5 days, then gradually began to put weight on it. We have only the 3 steps up to the porch, but he went right up on 3 legs for several days. He even tried to run and play on 3 legs. Gradually, he seemed to know when to try out his leg and had a wonderful recovery. We worried a lot, but dogs are smart, particularly BC (lol) so he paced himself.

I hate to break it to you, but this type of surgery will require at least 12 weeks of recovery time. It know it's hard with a terrier, but it's entirely necessary that you keep her resting. I had to sleep on the couch while my GSD recovered from a nasty knee surgery, and that took about 6 months, but he wasn't interested in moving much back then. The good thing is your dog seems to be healing well. So, all I can say is good luck and best wishes on your mission impossible!

I'll check out your shop. Sounds interesting!

Best,
Lynn

Thanks for sharing your dogs stories with me. I will try oh so very much to keep this little girl quiet, but have to keep reminding myself that we jokingly call her "Flying Walenda" after the acrobat troupe The Flying Walendas. LOL

She is agile and fast and full of life, even at nine years old. Her brother Jack on the other hand, is nicknamed "Big Baby" because that describes him to a T! Jack is like the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz. Zoey would be, let me see... one of the flying monkeys, but a good flying monkey, not the bad ugly flying monkeys helping the Wicked Witch of the West!

Anyway, thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.
